Probably because making big batches of them for special occasions is a Hmong tradition in the same way making big batches of tamales for special occasions is for Hispanic people.

Either way good or bad, if they're wrapped in masa I won't enjoy them. I don't like masa. Being that tamales are literally just masa and filling it's kind of significant.

I'm not saying it isn't true that tamale quality varies.

I'm saying that tamale fans are faster to use the "You just haven't had good ones." line than any other group of human beings on the planet in the history of mankind. It's uncanny.

And in the context of someone simply not liking masa it's kind of dumb to assume it'll matter anyway.

I don't like the taste or texture.

I also can't stand grits or cornmeal so maybe there's some connection.
