All Things in Moderation [Jas]

Post by Jas » 19 May 2020, 03:11

Hey all! It's been quite a while since I last roamed these halls, and it seems that in my absence, my old journal got removed.

It's all good, though. Fresh starts should never be overlooked.

Basic biographical information incoming!

Name: Jas (short for Jason, and pronounced just like the first syllable of the same).
Age: 35 (ugh, time spares no man)
Location: Western PA, USA
Hobbies/Interests: reading, gaming, woodworking, coding, and crude attempts at writing, drawing, and GFX.
Occupation: Nuclear Design Engineer

I'm married to my wife of (almost) 10 years, and I live with her and my 6-year old daughter in Pennsylvania.

I'm originally from central Texas, though, My extended family still lives there, for the most part.

I'll probably post everything from musings and frustrations to projects or lessons in here.

I've been around here off and on for many years now, and for any of you who know me, you'll know I'm pretty easygoing and chill, and I've been known to be a bit of a spammer.

So come in, hang out, spam, and do whatever. We've got 50 pages to burn, so let's do it!

All Things in Moderation [Jas]

Post by Jas » 19 May 2020, 05:01

Random musing of the evening, as the world slows around me:

Why am I here?

No, not on the planet. I'm not asking for the ultimate answer, and surely that's not the ultimate question.

What am I asking?

Why do I scurry back here periodically just to fit into a similar routine? While some of the main cast sticks around, the minor roles are recast and the dance goes on. Why is this going to hold my interest longer this time?

Why do I inevitably crawl away and just stop?

Is it boredom? Shame? Something else is shinier? I do have a lot on my plate right now but even if I didn't spam constantly I could still pop in for a message or two.

But no, when I'm here, I'm all in, and when I'm out, I'm a ghost.

I have many people here I consider friends, but I also don't seem to have a problem walking away. That's a pretty shitty thing to do, but I seem capable of it anyway. I am sure I've hurt some of them, both those who are still here and those I'll never meet again.

I feel guilty about it now, but honestly I don't feel that bad about it when I'm not here. And I feel guiltier about that.

It's not just people on here, either. It's all of my relationships. I looked at my call history as I was calling my mother on Mother's Day, and my last 4 phone conversations with my mom were mothers day and my birthday for the past two years.

I sometimes wonder if I'm broken. People are social animals; that's an observable truth. So why am I incapable of maintaining social bonds?

Because I feel the need to preempt reactions: no, people, this isn't a cry for help or for attention. This might be an apology, but if it is, it's a terrible one. Mostly, this is a realization. And I wonder if I can figure out a way to change something like that about myself.

I fear I cannot. I fear more that I don't really want to.

Hi Jas welcome back! It's funny I've always seen your name about and pronounced it as Jazz in my head so it's good to know the right way to say it!

It was interesting reading your post about social bonds, I relate to a lot of it. Anyway welcome back again :)

Thanks for the welcome, Pixie!

Many years ago (my guess is at least 13 years ago, because I'm fairly certain that this was before I met my wife), I was djing on the AL Radio. I said my name the right way and I found out basically everyone was pronouncing it much closer to the way you mention.

Even people who knew my name was Jason.

I was more upset than I should have been for quite a bit longer than I should have been, but eventually I realized that it doesn't really matter. I reasoned that the abbreviation "Jas" is probably more-commonly associated with the name "Jasmine" and that's probably where the miscommunication began.

And yeah, I was in a mood last night. Thanks for reading it!

See you around.

People pronounced it like Jazz? Really? Geez, imagine being wrong at pronouncing something wrong correctly.

The correct way to mispronounce Jas is Jass. Like ass. Because Jas got dat ass.

That's how I've always pronounced it in my head and I don't intend to stop.
