Are maids in maid cafes in Japan a modern, simplified, otaku targeted form of geisha?

I just find most UK Maid Cafes go for a couple of months then give up :XD:

Like how does MoE make money? Actually curious not ripping on them or anything :)

MoE are one of the few who actually put a lot of effort into social media, so they have a really loyal fanbase who regularly buy goods from them
