It probably just seems disproportionately common with cod because of how common cod is and how much cheap old cod is on the market. Cod is basically the McDonald's of fish after all so it's to be expected. The best way to not have fishy cod is to just buy it fresh and use it right away. A mistake a lot of people make is letting frozen cod dethaw too long, then you're right back to excessive decomp.
I've only ever had fishy cod a few times personally. But I also don't eat it much anymore because as far as whitefish goes I'd rather have haddock, flounder, bass, swordfish, tilapia, sole, etc.
The cod we got in Australia wasn't a salt water fish. The Murray Cod lives entirely in the Murray river, which is a freshwater system.
Though I imagine the process is still largely the same, growing up my family wasn't exactly wealthy so when we had fish it would have been because it was on sale, so not fresh at all. And it would likely spend a while in the freezer too.
I also prefer other fish, grouper and tilapia are probably the most accessible where we're living now and they're both very tolerable. I do enjoy a decent swordfish steak though, but haven't had swordfish in an absolute age.

Earl Douglas Haig, Order to the British Army, 12 April 1918
So death, the most terrifying of ills, is nothing to us, since so long as we exist, death is not with us; but when death comes, then we do not exist. It does not then concern either the living or the dead, since the former it is not, and the latter are no more.
I'd better clam up with these, too many and I'll start to flounder.
