A flare arched over and landed inside the fishing boat, and in moments there was smoke billowing out of it, mixing with the fog.

"Who shot that flare?" Jacob demanded. "What if..."

The boat exploded.

"Eh, I think she's dead now," the lookout said faintly, rubbing his eyes with his sleeve. Everything was still sorta blurry - but was it the smoke, the fog, or the bright light from the explosion?

"Ya think?" Jabob scowled. "Right, let's get back and report to the boss."

The boat's motors rumbled as it turned and headed deeper into the fog.

"Good thing GPS still works, huh boss?"

"Shut it, Louie!"

She frowned. What was this, some sadistic trap for suckers?

The lights didn't start until she was close, so someone had to be watching her. Shaking her head, she went back to the supplies she'd bundled up in the rain coat, picking them up by the life ring and walked down the beach, letting the waves wash away her foot prints.

She didn't have to see anyone to know somebody was stalking her. And likely more traps along the tree line. Great. Wet from the swim, boat blown up, no memory to explain why, and now this! At least her head didn't hurt as much.

Okay, only one thing she could do, for now.

She stopped abruptly, staring through the trees, then walked up past the tide marks but staying on the beach. Putting her bundle down, she knelt on the sand and began digging a small pit, just big enough for her, mounding the sand facing the beach. The sand was moist, but it was at least some shelter from the wind blowing in from the water. Carefully she untied the bundle, pulling out the blankets. They may smell, but they were warm. With a glance at the trees, she stripped off her wet clothes and draped them on the sand. Using the kitchen knife she liberated from the boat, she cut a hole in the middle of one of the blanket to make it into a poncho. She felt dry enough, so draped the itchy wool over her body, then wrapped herself up in the rain slicker. She set aside some bread turning hard and the ax. Bundling the rest of her supplies in the other blanket, she put the life ring in the shallow hole and sat on it, her back against the sandy mound, facing the trees, laying the fire ax in her lap and nibbled.

Two could play this watching game.

unbeknownst to the woman as she was in the hole waiting and watching, another boat was approaching the island from the opposite end. They were also searching for her
They were hooded guns at the ready only 2 of them. Eager to land and begin the search.

"We have to reach her before we do." Said the 1st
"I know" Said the 2nd

The woman suddenly heard rustling a short distance from her...

The explosion was back the way she'd came. Grabbing her clothes and the bag of supplies, she leapt into the woods, praying she wasn't landing on any sort of trap.

Whoever blew up her boat wasn't taking any chances.

Or the shot set off the surprise package on the beach.

Whatever was going on, it was best to get into the brush and run... in a bright yellow rain slicker. Good thing it was dark, and her eyes were recovering from the flash, but someone was bound to notice her little mound of sand on the beach.
