Hmm, maybe he didn't have to in the strict sense. But I think, if he didn't do it, Thorfinn presented a real threat to him. So he went the easier route, which was 100% win, instead of going the one with 90% win. He was definitely surprised by Thorfinn's skills. That's how I see it, I think. I agree with everything else you said. I don't think Askeladd regrets killing Thor. My interpretation of what he thinks is something like that he has his honour and he's a warrior. Thor saw that in him and that's why he allowed Askeladd to kill him. He predicted that he won't break his word. And indeed Askeladd didn't break it. Being a pirate and killing people is his job, and he's definitely not a good guy, but he's also not a blood thirsty monster/madman. I think he was impressed by Thor and he admires him, his honour as a warrior and the fact that he never went against what he believed in. That's why he kept his word. If he didn't, it would make him rubbish in his own eyes.

Chapter 93 is when the decision is made to go to Vinland. Not that the makers of this decision have left yet.

I think that's more than 3 cour if they follow the manga.
