There's no need to know Mazin Saga it's a kinda fun but kinda crappy game and a manga that Nagai will never finish.

You should know Galuf though he is a top tier FF old man.

I do now, but despite playing FFV more recently than FFIV, somehow I mixed the two up. The cast of V was wacky/great though. Faris is great. Also Gilgamesh for obvious reasons.

Some beach episodes were ok. Such as the ones in Mayo Chiki, Mahoromatic, school rumble.

I can only play FF games sparingly because the main character is almost always a moody brooding douchebag.

When I play video games I want to be someone different.

Just play XIII-2.

Noel has the most depressing life of any FF protagonist yet he's upbeat and doesn't like people being mopey fucks.

The only downside to Noel in XIII-2 is he shops for clothes at the same store as Sora from Kingdumb Farts.

Do I have to play the first one to understand what is going on?

Normally with a direct sequel the answer would be yes but XIII-2 mostly does its own thing with its own conflict separate from the uninteresting crap the characters blather about endlessly in the first game.

Also XIII-2 has a primer full of all the info you could ever need to know about XIII's garbage plot that my brain mostly shut down for whenever they started talking about Fal'cie/Ci'eth/L'cie shit or Cacoon.

Just know that Serah used to be a crystal and Snow and Hope used to be massive douchebags and Lightning had the personality of a brick in the first game too and that's basically all the info from game 1 you need. It's mostly new stuff after that.

I mean playing XIII first will make you appreciate how much better 2 is but it's really not worth it.

Unless you're a German looking for a good hallway simulator.

Don't bother with Lightning Returns because it goes right back to being shit and turns Noel into a pointless edgelord.
