Her family are hateful people, as her grandfather said.
Later on in the story when you know of her parents' history and a bit more about Tohru's childhood, you know the extent of why her family treats her that way.
Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
So Vivix has pretty much informed me the storyline is the same. lol well thanks Vivix. I did like the original, so I'll watch this one.

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
New episode out today.
Three things:
1. The hat is very important.
2. More evidence in the accuracy to the manga art: Hatori's hair and eyes. In the OG anime they are both a dark shade of green. The original art has him with black hair and violet eyes. Good job.
3. While in the manga Hana and Uo never stay over, this was an episode in the original anime and I am glad they added it in the last half of it. I think its a very endearing part.
Also, notice the times the Sohmas transform. You will see that as the story progresses it will happen less and less and it will fit the atmosphere the story takes.

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
I'm watching it right now.
Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
Context-wise, I don't get what problem he has with the dress, but ok.
Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
OK, so I can now safely say two things about this show.
1. I don't like Tohru. She's presented as perfect, but I do not consider this perfect. She's perfectly stereotypical. But I don't consider it good if a person who has all reasons to complain doesn't do it. So this assumption already fails and it makes it harder for me to connect with her.
2. This show is based on stereotypical behaviour and it assumes the viewers agree and accept these stereotypes. But I don't, so all those assumptions fail and it makes it much harder to connect with the characters.

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
Shouldn't things be based on stereotypical behavior? Shouldn't that help relate to the audience better? Also if I have time and find a place I'll watch the first episode because I need something lovey-dovey.

Let me explain it in a better way.
Let's say that person X is a liberal and gay. Let's say the person meets person Y after many, many years (they know each other from school for example). Person Y says a thing like that: "Oh, long time no see. How have you been? Me? I'm great! Oh, look at those two guys kissing at the corner. That's disgusting. Damn, Trump did a great thing in the way he dealt with those homos. Our children shouldn't watch it!"
This anime is like person Y for me being like person X. And I have the same face expression.
It's not really about the things above, but I think it was a good example. It's about other things in this anime as well.

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
Of course I can present an opposite one as well:
Person X: right-wing, religious (christianity)
Person Y: "Damn, the last piece of art produced by this artist was amazing. He put human genitals on the cross. It was really eye-opening and liberating. I'm glad museums are financed by taxes, otherwise people wouldn't be able to see such great art."

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
Oh, I see what you're saying. Stereotypical as in fitting into a left/right/whatever wing stereotype, not stereotypical as in common or relatable actions.

Yeah, but it's not about left/right wing. This was just an example to make it easier to understand.
This show just makes many assumptions and it expects the viewers to agree with them, but I don't, so it makes it weird to watch at some moments.

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
It might be more effective for the target audience, which you are likely not. The series was created ages ago for the Japanese market, so it probably assumes a few things about that society back yonder when. But I also don't know the context so it's a little hard for me to comment : x

Re: Fruits Basket (2019)
Like e.g. the one I mentioned before "After all marriage is the girl's greatest dream" (it's from one of the dialogues).
If things like that were just opinions of some characters, it'd be different. But in this show opinions like that are shared by all characters.

Yes, you're absolutely right about this! But there were other manga in this genre from the same period which were less stereotypical. The authors just wanted to make it more stereotypical, maybe because they thought it will be more relatable to the target audience.
