I think it makes total sense. I don't see how it wouldn't. He was acting based on his self interest disregarding the morality. He had SOME compassion because he wasn't a monster, that's all. His compassion was less intelectual and more like what people have when they see cute animals and poor people in the street. It was reactive only. He gave her food etc. not because he thought deeply about it, but because he'd feel bad if he didn't. His final breakdown made sense because even despite his behaviour she was kind to him, so it opened his eyes to what he did. I think he partially realised how bad he was towards the only person who was kind to him in that world. It makes perfect sense to me.

He bought her the expensive food and not the kind just to fill a belly and toys.
Thats hardly treating her poorly.

I am just saying she values other things much, much more than her own freedom. She probably doesn't even think about her freedom at all. That's why she has slave mentality. You don't agree with that?

  Spoiler:
All this could have been avoided if he had just freed her the moment Motoyasu mentioned it. I don't think Naofumi or Raphtalia had really thought about it recently.

He was either afraid of her being free, or he's a contrary little cuss that didn't feel like backing down. Maybe a little of both.

It definitely had the feeling that he wasn't really looking at her until she was free. Maybe he was afraid of her being free without really thinking about it at all.

He suddenly realized she wasn't a child anymore, only after she was free.

Yeah! It was clearly shown in this episode! He finally realised she's a human and not his tool.

I believe she’s a follower and has been for awhile

Though I tend to agree slavery has been in too many anime as of late.

It’d be nice if they got away from it and only used it in settings to emphasize its unethical.

I just think he was being human and locked himself inside a shell for protection and noticed little else going on around him. She finally freed him from it.

I think this show did a good job about it in comparison with some other shows. They showed a more complex picture of it including him being an opportunist and her accepting to be a slave. It painted a much more realistic picture of some aspects of slavery which are often ignored. (e.g. mental slavery and seemingly good people who accept slavery for personal gain or because it's normal in the society they live in)

It’s why I like this one, it explores needed depths others ignore.

Raphtalia herself disagrees with this at 19:20. But besides that, we get it. You have said the same post like a dozen times now, and no one disagrees that slavery is wrong.

Yeah.

That is basically what I said earlier, and now you are agreeing to it... Plus one of my prior posts was completely edited, I am not adding anymore to this conversation.

We might've misunderstood each other's argument at some point.

  Spoiler:
How I interpret what she said at 19:20 is that she thinks he is a good person deep down. And that's true. Good people sometimes do bad things and make bad moral choices. This was a case here. He supported her slavery, which was a bad moral choice, but he's in general a good person. He was just being an opportunist in this regard. That's the whole point as far as I understand.
