A little more practical bunk base where I replace all the long 'A' drawers with partitions and insert a single small 'B' drawer. Mattress will sit on top of a hinged lid. In Exploded view. I took the lock and recessed handle I made for the 'A' drawers and embedded it into the 'B' drawer.

Image

There is a shallow tray over the spot for the 'B' drawer.

Now to make myself a tall hinge.

First I need to make myself a finger or key (my word for it). I've also marked a flange that I'll expand out that's got clearance enough to allow the joint to rotate.

Image

Next, I make a copy and rotate it, then position it so that the flange coming out from both keys give me the correct spacing.

Image

Finally, I move the opposite side key out and begin the work of joining single keys together to form a string. Eventually I'll have myself a piano hinge.

Once I have my desired length and have capped it properly, I'll run a rod thrugh one side and add it to my tray and make the whole thing a component. The other side will be bound to the base and become another component.

There's probably an easier way, but this is the one I can do.

Selecting the lid group, I can rotate it open.

Oh man, that's cool!

I love seeing the design aspect behind things like hinges, 'cause you never really think about those small little facets that make up "basic" things we use. Like, how far back do piano hinges go, and when did they become popular? They're brilliant, really.

>.> Sorry, rambling, just some stuff I thought about seeing these.

I love the bed though. Kind of what I'd picture in an RV/camper or in some kind of military barracks. Very compact!

Working out hinges and assorted hardware is part of the fun, really.

The first one with the drawers could easily be a cadet bed, but this second one is based on a navy-style coffin-locker, just right for cramped quarters. Except mine is roomier.

Piano hinges are continuous hinges, typically used in pianos to allow the lid to lift.

Mine's modified to act as a swing-clear, so the bunk lid stays clear of the back edge.

What it needs next is a built-in prop to hold up the bunk. Some of the new units have a gas-filled cylinder that holds it open but can be pushed closed.

I feel like you should be a civil engineer or something with all this interest and knowledge.

Well, I'll admit to being curious about making storm drains. Mostly I'm just making sensible props.
