I think a lot of people mean op and ed songs when they say anime music, but that doesn't really make sense to me since aren't bands usually contracted for those? I get that bands will make songs specifically for op and ed, but is that enough to give them the distinction of anime music?

I think anime music is what people choosing bands and their songs usually choose as OPs, EDs and insert songs for anime series. Also there is a nice criterium. If one likes some music genres and many different artists and one has watched a lot of anime and one didn't like 90% or more of the OPs, EDs and insert songs, it probably means one doesn't like anime music, right?

Anime Music to me is any music that is part of that anime's soundtrack. Openings and endings are usually the most recognized, but it's not exclusive.

[mention=17199]Expendable[/mention] Yeah. But soundtracks do not differ much from non-anime productions and their purpose is rather to match what is seen on the screen. OPs, EDs and insert songs are more distinguishable as a semi-genre, I think. I forgot about the insert songs.

I like opening and ending songs of anime sure but I also like the music within the series of a anime for certain scenes. Such beautiful music there that really builds a moment.
