Looks good so far, I think the background will really help with how the shading works as the big ol' light source is behind.

In your first post you have one third down from the top... I would love to see that in colour or just where you are being super creative and do it in colours contrary to the original. It looks good though and you are getting there!
I don't know why I like that one...its his expression...so stubborn and cute like a little critter ready to pounce you for daring to come across it's path. heh.

my drawing skills maybe 7 - 9 years ago were much better than they are now, but you are correct

you get figure/form down muuuuuuuch better than i do, however!
i measure / outline stuff out and it still looks wonky sometimes
