In fact its name comes from groovy.
When it was first served by amateur butcher Franky B. Tupperwear to a friend to cover up the poor quality of the meat he said 'Try this... it's groovy'. His friend though had been huffing airhorn gas and because of this had developed a hearing problem and heard it as 'Try this... it's gravy'.
His friend enjoyed it so much he asked for some to be served at his hotel chain under the name 'gravy' but it was a misunderstanding, hence the name.
