I love these portraits, you've really brought them to life and the attention to detail is very admirable :)

i'll definitely be watching this forum for new drawings as you have an incredible talent.

so i browsed through your thread for your early work (since you have so many pages, dating back to 2011) to see how much of a jump you've made

you already had a pretty good grasp on anatomy initially, but seeing where you've come since then is phenomenal!

now you've got great skills in value, color, and amazing anatomy skills

how long have you been drawing, if i might ask?

because this seems like dedication for 5 - 10+ years to reach a mastery like this

Well, I wouldn't call it mastery. I still have a long way to go in my personal opinion. But to be honest, I've been drawing since before I can remember, but I didn't actually start teaching myself properly until about 16-17 yrs ago? Obviously if I trained myself in a bit more of a dedicated fashion I'd be farther along than now, but I didn't. Instead, I went on what I like to call art binges where I spent a few months drawing a lot, learning new stuff, then didn't pick up a pencil again for another several months to a year, then go on another art binge. That's when I decided to start learning properly and signed up for online courses. I mostly signed up because it kept me drawing consistently since my life was too hectic to keep myself doing it in my spare time, so I figure classes would force me to keep on track. Lol. I ended up learning a lot from them though so that's always a plus. Just wish it wasn't so expensive!

Thank you so much! I wish it was a little more accurate, but I am pleased because it turned out better than I anticipated.

out of curiosity, where did you sign up for art classes?

i've looked at a few paid places, and a few free ones, but none of them are structured enough for me (but i'm still doing a good job of drawing every day) and i tend to fall out of the learning piece and just do things like life studies

the only one i know of that's paid that's extensive is like... noah bradley's art camp, but that's waaaaaaay over my budget

i'm assuming yours is waaaaaay over my budget too, but maybe not in the future

Well, I only take one class a semester because of cost and life, but at the moment I'm enrolled at the Academy of Art Online, based out of San Francisco. I also took online classes at the The Art Insitute of Pittsburgh, online. Before I joined the military I took studio classes at Austin Peay State University too...

If you are looking for something a little cheaper, Pencil Kings is an awesome self paced website that teaches drawing and art and has a free art forum too. IT's like $200.00 for a year subscription with unlimited access to all types of classes. They also have free classes on their youtube channel as well and a good podcast that features different artists from the field from book illustrators to comickers and mangaka's. It's a much cheaper option (and free for a lot of the basic classes on youtube), you just have to keep on it... and do a lot of sketches (5 to 10 minutes drawings) from life. As I have always felt, you have to have an understand of real anatomy before you can really mastering the art of drawing in less realistic styles (anime, comic book, cartoon, ect).

Insert shameless clan plug here- If you want to learn more, my clan offers a lot of threads with great links to helpful videos, tips, and other drawing activities that can help stimulate your creative juices. We've been a little slow in activity lately too so you'd also be helping us out. Feel free to check it out, just click the Art Play portion of my signature to check out the sign-up thread.

i'm only taking one class a semester right now too, but to finish up an associate's

about all i can afford at the moment, even if it is a community college, it's still a degree

pencilkings sounds good though, i gotta look into that

and i try to draw several blind contours and at least one or two still life pieces each day, alongside something fun

reaaaaally trying to improve my art, and it's helping me to build up some patience i lost due to years of video games and constantly watching something in the background

and yeah, from what i've seen, anatomy is one of the key components for an intermediate artist to work on

not quite intermediate yet, but i'm getting there!

thank you!

Try drawing from moving life. It's more of a challenge. Go to the park, or store front, or anywhere there's people (starbucks even) and just sit down and try to sketch them in the moment. I learned the most from trying to sketch people in motion because it forces you to ignore the detail and just get down the basic idea. The biggest mistake artist do when sketching for practice is that they try to capture too much detail. Details are for full drawings, sketches are for understand how the body relates to itself and the world around it, to get the basic understand of what is happening in that moment, and to use later as references when you want to create an original drawing based off a sketch you made. I think I posted some of my sketch pages before, but I'll post them again...

These are thumbnail sketches, all are no more than 15 minutes sketches, no less than five minutes. You can tell which were the longer ones by the amount of detail put into them. In any case, anytime you need advice, feel free to ask! I'm more than happy to offer critiques if you'd like.

i don't get out enough, so real life sketches would be good for me anyways!

i know there's sites you can use for gesture drawings, but i guess that really doesn't compare to having to train your mind to finish drawings that have already changed since they're moving

i'll see if i can't swing by somewhere and just draw, but it would defintely feel awkward to me at first, especially if someone wanted to see my art

still haven't gotten to a point where i'm okay with showing random passerbys my drawings yet, but i'll get there

thank you though!

Nice drawings there really good bye the way. That ones with the ear is really cool, like a real ear I could pick up, well you know not steal another person's ear or something. Very detailed.
