What are your favourite anime from this period? Do you have any recommendations? Do you know about any hidden gems? Which anime from this period apply to the current time and which became outdated? What are the differences between anime then and now (art, animation, music, plots, storytelling, characters, fashion etc.)?

Very underrated show. It's cute and lots of fun.

Kimagure Orange Road (1987)

I don't remember it well but it was good.
I sometimes use one of two avatars of the cat mascot from this show:

I don't remember the cat's name but it was bomb.

Most of it is pretty basic, and animey/tropeish.
What I really liked about the series was the dismissal of the "super robot" genre that comes about in episode 3 (or 4 maybe?). Also, I greatly enjoyed the parody anime inside the anime, Gekiganger 3. It's basically Getter Robo disguised as "any generic shounen super robot mecha show". IDK why I like this series so much other than that, as I've forgotten most of it, but I remember it having roots/shots at Evangelion as well. Not that I don't like Evangelion, but sometimes I feel like it's gotten a little too much/I] praise, especially given that there are similar "alternatives" like RahXephon, Eureka Seven (another personal fave), and in a hilariously bad sense, Dual! Paralell Trouble.

I don't think it's something you'd have enjoyed, really. It's a very 90's, very tropy, anime.

Another I really liked/like is Kare Kano / His and Her Circumstances. I have NOT yet finished it, sadly, and may never at this rate (it's taken me 2 weeks to watch 7 episodes of K-On

It also makes for some really cute animation and great gifs, like this one I made years back.

What I would like to recommend is Twilight Q.
Firstly, the animation is really, really good for a 1987 show. Secondly, it's a 2-part OVA. What's funny about it is that these 2 parts are TOTALLY unrelated. They even have separate staff. The first part is good, but it's just a normal s-f anime. But the second part... Thirdly, the second part was directed by Mamoru Oshii. You know what it means, don't you? He he. The second part is experimental. Only for people who are not afraid of watching something outside of what they usually watch. It's not your usual anime.

But I'll watch it.
Mamoru Oshii... Angel's Egg, Dallos, Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh, Patlabor, Urusei Yatsura. I've only seen half of those.

It seems I really like his anime.

Are you sure it's not too experimental for you?
I think you should like at least the first part.

Well I assume the episode isn't terribly long. If I can bother to watch the first one, I'm sure I can bother to watch the second lol.

He he, yeah. Just to let you know, I liked Angel's Egg and I think it's a great anime. Obviously it's not for everyone. I would like to know your opinion on it if you ever watch it. I wonder if it's too much for you or not, he he.
