If you buy 1000 at 100 bells, for a total of 100k, even if you sell as low as 150 bells thats still a 50k profit. If you sell for 500 bells thats a massive 400k profit. Now if you bought two or three thousand.. you can easily invest 300k and get 1.2m back

I've only done it a few times so far and made 5 million+ profit each time. I already basically don't need to bother earning bells anymore.
