you'd think by now, panic attacks would have been deselected out of our evolutionary path but i guess evolution is more random than it is progress based

Not much I can say about that - but evolution is indeed based on entirely random mutations. Those people who failed to exhibit panic attacks probably ended up inside a carnivores stomach, as they are derived from the "Flight or fight" response. The triggers are less physical than they once were, but no less real to the sufferers.

yeah, if evolution was goal-oriented instead of randomly selected, we wouldn't have wound up with an extremely easy chance to choke to death from swallowing
