Been wanting to get into final fantasy but never knew where to start because they are so many of them! Are they all separate stories? If so are there any stand out bad ones, or just not as good as the others? I have a couple already (both random buys tbh) but like I said I'm not sure if they are good starting points.

So the majority of the final fantasy games are completely stand-alone, there are some which share certain themes and elements, and a couple of direct sequels.
FF 1 through 3 are 8 bit era (NES)
FF 4 through 6 are 16 bit era (SNES)
FF 7 through 9 are PS one
FF 10, 10-2 and 12 are PS2
FF 13 series is PS3/Xbox 360
FF 15 is current gen.

11 and 14 are MMO's

If you like your MMO's 14 is great to get into at the moment as the free trial is very generous, although the first 20 or so hours of story is quite tedious.

Otherwise, it depends on your prefered play style. 1 through 10 are turn based, whereas since 12 they are slightly more action rpg style. Many people will tell you their favourites and a lot of it comes through nostalgia (FF7 was a lot of peoples first so they will tell you it rules all, but personally i don't think it has aged well).

I'd say 10 is a nice entry that's not too hard, has a good story (in my opinion) and some fun characters. BUT it is very linear! Personally my favourite is 6.

Heresy! :(

Final Fantasy 7 and 8 stand out because they have an industrialised/sci fi setting (as opposed to castles and princesses and elves in the forest).

Final Fantasy 7 is about a disillusioned soldier who turns mercenary and takes a job with a group of ecoterrorists who are fighting against an evil corporation who is "killing the planet". The emphasis is more on personal morality and forging a way through a chaotic world and how the characters grow into the heros they need to be to really save the planet.

Final Fantasy 8 is about students at a military academy. You start off my travelling the world on missions before the plot unfolds. The emphasis is is more duty and being part of a rigid hierarchy with people depending on you to make the right decisions. And there's a much stronger romance element than 7 with a cheery civilian girl who breaks through the main character's gloomy introversion and gives him a whole new perspective on things.

These games were groundbreaking in the late 90s but Lloydiboy is probably right, people who still cling to them probably do so out of nostalgia.

Final Fantasy 9 is castles and princesses and cutesy big headed characters and a nonsensical plot deep fried in light hearted humour.

Final Fantasy 10 is a religious puritan world where most technology has been outlawed due to some calamity and the characters are on a Lord of the Rings style journey to vanquish evil which turns out not to be what they thought it was.

I'm too young for the 2d games before 7 and too old for the real time games after 10 so no comments on those.
