Lisa Britton, childen's author tackling gender inequality and bullying

Post by BlackNoise » 17 Jul 2019, 19:57

On my travels through Twitter, I came across an interesting children's book author named Lisa Britton. https://twitter.com/LisaBritton

I encourage you to read through her tweets and check out her website for yourself.

I am posting this, personally, because I am concerned with the issues around gender inequality today, mainly the divide between men and women caused by fourth-wave feminists such as the #metoo movement which, while helpful in exposing the likes of Harvey Weinstein, have since done more harm than good by targeting innocent men; as well as the recent trend in movies that disregards men in favour of women in the name of "diversity". I trust many who read this are aware of what I am talking about.

To anyone unaware, let me be clear that I am not, in any way, shape of form, sexist towards women. I firmly believe in gender equality and that women should be allowed the same opportunities as men.

I hope to spread word of this author and her works so that others can do the same and people would buy and read them to their children, both boys and girls (or if you prefer, girls and boys), and inspire them to be better.

Thank you.

Moved this to General Discussion as it's more fitting there. :)

First, twitter is hot garbage. Second, I agree, #MeToo was good when it targeted people who legit needed to be called out on their bs, but it has since spiraled out of control. Feminism and Social Justice ARE good, it's when you get into the extremes that it goes off the rails. As TJ Kirk (The Amazing Atheist) once said about modern feminism, "Feminism is the idea that we can make both sexes equal by focusing solely on the issues of one of them."

There are different kinds of feminism and they are very different from each other. When you say feminism you MUST say which type of it you have in mind, otherwise what you're saying is (usually) meaningless.

The two major branches are liberal feminism and radical feminism (and the word radical doesn't come from radicalism but from the Latin word "radix" which means "root"). There are also smaller branches e.g. anarcha-feminism, socialist feminism etc.

Liberal feminism and radical feminism are often in opposition to each other on many matters.

So when people claim feminists believe this or that it's often only one of these branches that believes it and the other is often opposed to it.

One example can be pornography. Liberal feminism is often pro pornography, radical feminism is often against it.

It doesn't make too much sense speaking about feminism as if it were only one ideology, because it isn't.

Many people on the Internet, including YouTubers don't know what they're talking about and they confuse different kinds of feminisms and when criticising one type, they use arguments which only apply to the other type.

Also, some feminists got banned from Twitter not so long ago, basically because they didn't subscribe to the version of feminism promoted by Twitter. So the world isn't like (if we ignore the smaller branches):

feminism vs anti-feminism

but

radical feminism vs liberal feminism vs anti-feminism

(and there are different types of anti-feminism as well, e.g. "feminism has already achieved its goals", vs. "men and women should not be equal")
