omfgzergrush wrote:i am staunch believer in fact over opinion, maybe a reason i don't like debate much since it feels like it's mostly opinion wars in places i've seen

i see what you mean though, it'd be like the concept of "seeing is believing" in the sense that if you have not experienced, how can you be certain it's true? from the ground up when you're born till you die, you're raised with some level of education in many places in the world, and this would essentially cause you to believe in authority figures or organizations such as your school or your parents. i'd wager that trust is the only metric that you could actually measure how much someone or something says is true, and even then, forming a healthy criticism is ridiculously important. having no knowledge of something ends up leading towards either testing it out yourself, deferring to whom you believe is an expert/someone you can trust, or just plain making something up

Yeah, that's an important issue as well. Trusting "experts" or "authorities". But how can you know if someone is an expert if you don't know the subject? You need to trust "experts in telling who is and who isn't an expert=educational institutions". He he...

Also another funny problem...

If believing false things can benefit you, should you believe in them? What if the benefit is temporarily. You cannot be sure how long the benefit will last... :P Not knowing the truth might kill you at some point. But you also cannot be sure if e.g. it doesn't kill you when you learn the truth.

So is believing true things better in any way?

well, i'd wager that falls under the whole believing in a deity aspect, at least that's a big one

let's say for example someone believes that the christian god is real, and another person believes that kalima is going to reap the earth someday

if one of them turns out to be right, would that belief have been any benefit? to the christian, surely, assuming that the christian god is truly just and does not give perdition to people for transgressions against he/it/whatevs. the christian would not suffer at all if kalima was the supreme deity (from what i know, kalima does not punish unbelievers, but that may not be true for all sects) because all life would eventually be ended by kalima. idk, i think this one's a big "circumstances are relative, value on beliefs, regardless of truth can only be placed on the individual"

You like gods, don't you? LOL

So a question to you:

If you assume gods can do anything...

Can a god create a stone which is so heavy that they cannot lift it? :D

(The funny words are omnipotence paradox)

i had a big fling in trying to find what religion i belonged to after growing up mormon and realizing it was a load of horse poo, thus i researched

and this question is p much an impossibility because it assumes things about god/whatever, if it was omnipotent, it would undoubtedly be able to do paradoxes and break our fragile brains

also, 'tis midnight here and i must away to bed

but you can keep posting more and i'll respond tomorrow!

kinda fun so far

(also don't mind citizen he's a fuddy-duddy)

I forgot to mention before that my balls fell asleep once. I must have been sitting in a way that pinched the testicular artery.

It was very unpleasant.

I once saw Jesus move an immovable object down at PC Beach during Spring break. I gave him a high five and it scarred my DNA.
