Pokemon: Modern mechanics explained

Post by Kai » 01 Jun 2018, 14:26

As requested by toshioa

Individual Values (IVs)
Every Pokemon has Individual Values in each of its six stats. Each of them can get up to 31 points per stat on all 6. See more here.
Effort Values (EVs)
You can earn these by battling any Pokemon. How many you gain, and for which stat(s) depends on the Pokemon you battle. Each Pokemon can only have up to 255 (252 when you consider that 4EVs=1 stat point) in each stat, with every 4 points giving you an extra point in your stats. The upper limit for any one Pokemon is 510, so think about the stats you want to invest in and how much you want to put into those stats. More here.

Shiny Pokemon
Shiny Pokemon is an alternative colour scheme. Each Pokemon has one (eg. Red Gyarados) it's pretty complicated to explain in more detail so see here

Pokerus (PKRS)
Pokerus is short for Pokemon Virus. It's an extremely rare virus you can obtain from wild Pokemon that permanently doubles the base EVs you can gain from battling Pokemon. They can also spread to other Pokemon in your team. There are no negatives to your Pokemon contracting it so don't be alarmed. More here

Links to other mechanics.

Thank you NightmareHollow :) Much appreciated! I will take a proper look at this this evening and heck, I may even grab my 3DS and copy of Moon out too ;) Having just read the IVs and EVs explanation quickly I see I need to do a lot more reading and research but thank you for starting this thread :)

I can imagine it's hard to catch up from the early days lol. Some of the advanced mechanics are so technical too, so I can still occasionally get lost in them. There's also so many moves as well. Another thing to check out if you haven't yet, which I forgot to include a direct link to, is the latest type match-up chart.

I've seen quite a few people state that they never really looked past Gen 1, so I thought this would be a good topic for anybody curious about the newer generations. I'm thinking of expanding on it to provide links to all of the other mechanics and whatnot. I haven't been 100% into Gen 7 either but I do watch one or 2 PokeTubers on Youtube. PIMPNITE does some really interesting theme teams based on nerdy franchises where possible and they makke sense. Watching his videos convinced me to try Gen 7 again. I was late getting into Pokemon (almost a decade later) but I've played almost every main series game so far.

it's a little complicated a system, and some people say it drains the fun from the games, but i think it opens up a whole new world of fun, honestly

also, bulbapedia has some better looking graphs than serebii, in my opinion

especially natures: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki ... of_Natures

(i just hate the serebii site design, honestly)

they're only important if you wanna "clock" the games and get best stat pokemon for everything.

Yup, anyone playing casually or non-competitively can completely ignore IVs and EVs. If you want to go online and battle, however, you need to learn about them.
