Can anyone help me create useable sprites for a Unity project?

Having completed 4 tutorial projects it's possibly time to try and create my own original games, I have a ton of ideas but I suck at creating sprites and other graphics in GIMP.

Can anyone help?

I don't want someone to do the work for me, just help me work out how to use GIMP.
