So I got some  sheets of wood from one of my cousins so figured would  try to make a sword with what tool I have on hand I made the basic out line so far I plan to do a full katana so that means a guard, hilt , sheath etc. The reason I am making this thread  to see if anyone can offer any advice on how I should continue since this is my first ever sword build I would appreciate any advice ,video recommendations and constructive criticism.

coping saw
bench vice
wood plane
drill 
router bits

Okay so I shaping out the katana now I was going to use a router to form the blade  but I decided to use my planes and chisels instead I shaped out the edges, the tip of katana and the back then I used my rasp(file) and sandpaper  to clean it up I feel as though I need to define the blade more hopefully it is visible in the  picture I add I will also add the type of planes   I use.

I don't know how to make swords, but I think it looks good so far. Cant wait to see more.

Very nice! From what I can see, your edge is good. What sort of wood are you using? If your intention is to paint the blade, you may need to use some wood hardener to keep the softer sections from absorbing all of the paint. You may want to cut some masking tape into an oval or diamond section on the back of the blade to protect it from your metal paint, so you can show that to inspectors to confirm it is, in fact, wood.

From what I can see, your blade looks to be very straight - did you give your blade just a slight curvature or is this a straight katana?

Thanks @Expendable it is a straight katana my jig saw died on me so I had to shape it by hand using a pull saw, coping saw and chisels . I was thinking about painting it and planned to do some research about I made a note about what you suggested so thanks the katana is made from plywood

working on the guard right now my first 2 tries failed maybe I should change the design.

So I have been trying to make a sword guard with a coping saw I was trying to do something interesting for a design but that was harder then I thought so I gave up on that but I got a rotary tool  from my uncle collin so I will give it another go at it after some practise with the rotary tool . I drilled some  holes at the area where the blade attaches to the handle once I shape out the handle I will use glue  and wooden dowels to attach them my hope is that it is enough to hold to not I will use nails.the handle tends to be the size of your forearm but I used my nephews forearm so it's shorter it going to him after so it made sense. Nothing changed much with the sword itself but I will post a picture of it with one of my practise guards so you  you know what I'm planning hopefully I can give you some thing interesting with the guard . I still don't know what I'm doing for a habaki.

Love the pins for your handle section. If you want this to come apart, you may want to finish each part separately and do the assembly when it's dry. How is this progressing?

How far have you got with your creation? You already have a good base!

I'm also trying to make my own wooden katana with the help of a website I use, and I want it to be as realistic as possible. I'd like to make absolutely all the parts of a real sword but I'm afraid that some of the details won't be feasible.

What do you think?

And as it's wooden, it'd be authorised to take to cons and stuff because it doesn't have sharp edges.
