I saw a video of someone doing that. He used a gopro mounted to a backpack and elevated with a stick for the overhead view, which he watched on a VR headset.
He kept running into shit.

He should try it with a drone or drones. That'd be a more realistic third person view.

That would indeed be an interesting engineering problem. A signal being transmitted that identifies you would work for where you are. But steering it and having it avoid obstacles would be challenging,
