If you go "User Control Panel > Board preferences > Edit notification options" you can turn off mentions now, not sure if you found that yet.

There seems to be two mention related options, not sure which one needs to be turned off, maybe both. Also can't guarantee the feature actually works yet. Plus there are a bunch of other types of notification options you might also want to tweak.
