birbs are currently very spooked because the cat jumped up on the desk by their cage despite being squirted and told to stay away from them a few times in the past

it's different for cats, cats are instinctive hunters so she's always going to somewhat desire the birds
however, this does not mean she can't be classically conditioned to gtfo from where the birds are

our cat is a definite hunter, she catches grasshoppers and brings them to me and has found a few mice before
birds, she struggles with because they're fast and fly, she's only ever caught one of them

the most plausible explanation i've seen for bringing an animal to you is that they're trying to teach you to hunt
i still like the "here's a gift thx 4 taking care fo me" theory though
