Changing my first name by deed poll - Would it be possible?

Post by Rich-Allen1976 » 24 Feb 2024, 12:07

Above.

The reason is because both mine and Dad's initials are R Allen (he's Robert, I'm Rich/Richard) it causes confusion with various organisations such as the Bank.

As daft as it sounds, as a Bruce Lee/Bruce Wayne (Batman) fan, I'm a fan of the name Bruce, would I be able to legally become Bruce Allen?

I am aware of Google.

"He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!" (Michael Palin in Monty Python's "Life of Brian")
"I am speaking UK English in a Sheffield accent!" (Me most of the time I'm on the landline or mobile)

Changing my first name by deed poll - Would it be possible?

As far as I am aware, you can change your name to whatever you want.

A deed poll is a legal document that proves a change of name. You can change any part of your name, add or remove names and hyphens, or change spelling.

There are 2 ways to get a deed poll. You can either:

1 - make an ‘unenrolled’ deed poll yourself

How to make your own deed poll
You’ll need 2 witnesses to sign your deed poll. They must be 18 or over.

Some organisations will not accept a deed poll if a witness lives at the same address or is a close relative.

2 - apply for an ‘enrolled’ deed poll

You can put your new name on public record by ‘enrolling’ it at the Royal Courts of Justice if you’re 18 or over. It costs £48.32

Ask the organisation you’re dealing with (for example your bank) which type of deed poll they’ll accept as proof of your new name.
To those just starting on the journey of life I say...
Bang your own drum. Walk your own path. Live wildly. Love fiercely.
As you near the end, look back with no regrets.
