Disability specific non-jobs?

Post by Rich-Allen1976 » 06 Sep 2023, 11:51

Are there any of these still around? I would refuse on principle to go anywhere near them myself, but in some cases, they're the only way a disabled person will ever "work", even though the "pay" is a frankly insulting £2 a day because all the clients are on benefits and can't earn more than pennies without the DWP fools jump on them from a great height with benefit sanctions.

I am aware of Google, and I am NOT in the mood to be insulted.

Disability specific non-jobs?

I'm assuming you are referring to volunteering? If so any charity shop will probably take you. If not shame on the managers. If I've got the wrong idea perhaps you could give examples because I'm not sure if I've got the same idea of "non-jobs" as you have

I've worked in several charity shops including at least 4 different Oxfam shops, 3 different British Heart Foundation shops, MIND, PDSA, and Sue Ryder, oh and last month I applied for the new St Luke's in Town, they never did acknowledge my application! Comes to something when a flippin' Charity shop won't employ me when I declare my disabilities.

The non jobs I am referring to were Factory type settings where the workers were "paid" an insulting 2 quid a day because they were all on benefits and can only earn pennies without the DWP jumped on them from a great height with benefit sanctions.

Fortunately, stuff like Remploy Factories were all closed down years ago, Including I think, the Reclaim Recycling Plant in Wadsley Bridge (behind Sainsburys) where I did 3 days about 15 years ago (and hated every second!)

Hmm... Have you looked at the disability confident opportunities listed on the gov website? They might not be non jobs per se but I've applied to one sadly I cant go ahead with mine but when I put my application in (it was as a HSBC call operator) they really did take the extra step to making sure I would have reasonable adjustments in place.

How about doing some work to help others with disabilities? Take that in any way you want but I find working with people with disabilities a lot more enjoyable and I feel more at ease. Sadly it does require some looking around, I don't know any specific places but deffo check for opportunities that are labelled disability confident

In my experience, most places who say they are "disability confident", don't mean it, they just say it because it's a legal requirement under the Equality Act.

Like, last August, I had an interview for a Warehouse position at Argos in Meadowhall, I didn't get the job, although I suspect that's partly my fault for quoting the EA and the fact I can only work a few hours a week due to personal circumstances.

I hate to break it to you Ric but perhaps it's just a case of keep trying and you will just find the right place. Totally get the frustration, I think I would be annoyed too (trust me I wanted to flip tables back during COVID when I was unemployed). And that's coming from my experience, with as little as it may seem lol. But honestly jokes aside both places that have accepted me I've noticed a real pattern that it will feel right, and accommodating for you if you get accepted. Those that reject based on say... availability (I'm convinced I got rejected in one job interview because of this) then thats a sign that they don't want to make that accomodation it's not really the candidates fault. I can open a whole can of worms about this lol but to keep it to topic I will stop there :sweatdrop:

Yeah, a few months ago I had an interview in a clothes shop in Meadowhall, the money wasn't bad, and it was working on the till, not in the Warehouse, which is what I have training and experience in! Did I get the job after paying £9 each way in Uber fares to get there? To quote my sig, are you avin' a laugh? They turned me down because I can't work weekends due to the support workers! I wouldn't mind but surely this is contrary to any and all aspects of the Equality Act?!

Probably dodged a bullet tbf, I'd probably put down retail and hospitality as one of the least accessible jobs. They are very picky with availability and probably will work you to the ground beyond your capabilities now matter how many reasonable adjustments (if they even gonna allow them) you agree to

Like I just said over on Twitter, under the current version of the Equality Act, what classifies as "reasonable adjustments" is open to interpretation at the employer's discretion IMO.

Which in my experience almost never works out for the better.
