Emergency Alert Broadcast - How was it for you?

Post by Ojisama » 23 Apr 2023, 21:50

For weeks now we have been bombarded with information about the UK Emergency Alert Broadcast on our mobile phones. So with great anticipation, as 3pm approached, my wife and I were sat in a garden-centre cafe with our phones on the table waiting for something to happen.

The Cafe was packed. Well over 100 people enjoying an afternoon snack, or some cake and a coffee. All the normal hustle and bustle that you would expect.

2.59 and a strange tone was heard from the table next to us. A gentleman took his phone out of his pocket and then put it away. 3pm - nothing. 3.01, the tone was heard from another table. Still nothing from ours. 20 minutes later, puzzled and disappointed, we had finished our drinks and decided to be on our way. As we left, the tone was heard for a third time.

So, if this is viewed as a representative sample, only 3% of the population received the notification.

How about you? Did you get the alert?

I got it at 2:59, and then another one again around 15 minutes later. Happened twice for me :sweatdrop:

I didn't get it cause I'm with Three and apparently anyone on that network didn't get it :XD:

After a bit of reading, it seems there are a number of reasons why you might not have got the alert.

1 - As Mel has said, subscribers to Three didn't get sent the alert.

2 - It only went out to phones using Android 11 or later, and IOs 14.5 or later.

3 - You had to be using 4G or 5G.

4 - You had to have the notification switched on in your settings.

So if you have an older phone with an older version of Android (Like me) or that uses 3G or even 2G, you will be the first to die when the apocalypse comes.

Three is crap anyway, both Dad and I were with them a few years back, and because both our initials are R Allen, they thought he was me and I was him! :rage:

And don't get me started on the annoyingly incompetent Foreign call centre.
