Scooby Doo for Adults?

Post by Ojisama » 01 Aug 2022, 20:30

Apparently so.

HBO Max has confirmed that work is going forward on a new animated series called "Velma", based around the bespectacled, nerdy sleuth from the children's show, but with a twist.

In recent years, staff involved with the franchise have confirmed and embraced the news that Velma is gay. She has long been a LGBTQ+ icon, and after years of being underappreciated by the other members of Mystery Inc she is going to get the spotlight she deserves.

In the new series, Velma will be investigating more "mature" crimes than holographic monsters and costumed burglaries. A recent sneak peek from Warner Bros revealed Velma examining a corpse with it's brain removed, and visible brain matter scattered around the scene.

The producers have confirmed that there isn't any dog, and no van, but the human members will be making an appearance. No plot details have been released, but the series is expected to cover some of Velma's origins and back story, including the fact that she is now of South Asian descent. She is being voiced by Mindy Carling (The Office) who has stated that if a dog can solve crimes, then Velma CAN be brown.

So, just how adult are they going to go? Blood and gore definitely. Swearing? Probably. Sex and nudity, a-la Archer? Well, we will have to wait and see for that one.

Here's somebody else's take on the series.

I'm looking forward to this! I love scooby doo and the best series of the new ones is Scooby Doo Incorporated that got really dark for a kids show. Sad it didn't get renewed

Jinkies!

I liked A Pup Named Scooby Doo the best.

I imagine this will be on par with Riverdale as far as adult content. Maybe more because it's hbomax.

I overlooked the part where is it says it's animated. So I doubt it will be like Riverdale.

I haven't seen that clip or any of it at all so I'm purely guessing.

I have no problem with it, but I'm sure the left would bemoan them making the main character in a cartoon gay!

I mean she always gave off vibes she was part of the LGBTQ even in the original series cause her and Daphnie were always giving each other looks and dialogue. They have now just officially confirmed it in some adaptations.

Well in the original 70s cartoon Daphne always went with Fred lol.

I always was a fan of her though, she's definitely in my top 3 cartoon darlings after Betty Rubble and Wilma Flintstone lol.

Mystery Incorporated was a great longrunning show that had some more adult oriented jokes and concepts. It was really the best of the series. Great actors. planar travel, characters actually died. There was real paranormal stuff

Scooby Doo for Adults?

2 episodes released in the States, but no UK release date yet, and it seems that the world HATES the new Velma.

Not the character, the series of the same name. It has a miserly 6% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and social media is seething with indignant comments about the sexualisation of minors, gore, poor humour and racialisation of the beloved characters.

"Red-haired Daphne – voiced by Constance Wu and East Asian in this telling – is reborn as a sexually aggressive mean girl (aged 15). Goodie two-shoes Fred (Glenn Howerton from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) is a sexist, blue-blooded himbo whose biggest crime is to be white. Sam Richardson’s Shaggy – introduced by his “real” name of Norville – is an African-American broken man-child who has an unrequited crush on Velma." (See source below)

Prophetic words.

Despite all this, the show is the most watched HBO animated series ever, and has already been renewed for a second series.

I guess there really is no such think as bad publicity.

I'll reserve judgement until I get chance to watch it.

Meh, the original Fred was voiced by Frank Welker, who did almost everything back in the 70s/80s, everyone including me was in love with the original Daphne.
