Regarding the 1953 WOTW movie, apart from the Martians and the fact they died from exposure to Bacteria at the end, it had almost no connection to the original book, it was also set in California, opposed to the late 19th Century England setting of the book.
Also back in the late 80s there was a follow up TV series to the 1953 movie.
