Opinions on Algorithms

Post by Buta » 26 Jul 2019, 13:03

So many services these days use algorithms to arrange recommendations to their customers.

I was just wondering what you lot thought of the ones you've come across in the services you use? Are there any you've come across that were very good?

Like, I find Steam is really not great at recommending new games to me, and Netflix can be alright at times. YouTube's is annoying at times.

I don't think I've ever come across an algorithm that was good at knowing what I'd be interested in, but that said, I'm a pretty private person which probably doesn't help my experience.

steam's needs work, that's for sure

netflix's is based on what people who watch what you watch also watch, so you might just be an outlier there and the recommendations don't match up with you

youtube's is literally being systematically gamed by a few specific powers, so don't ever expect to get anything good off the youtube recommendations unless you hit very, very specific niches

algorithms are fine and all, but they definitely don't fit everyone. i would wager most people get some good out of some of them at least, though. i sometimes i find a decent video off my youtube recommendations but i'm particularly niche in terms of what i watch on there.

algorithms are pretty much the future of advertising and we're going to go into AIs that advertise and recommend for us eventually once they get powerful enough, so expect progress

Netflix is actually known for making one of the best set of algorithms for recommending content and figuring what new type of content they need to acquire for their subscribers and possibly new ones. Though I dare say Amazon has advanced theirs fairly well too. The other only other contenders at this point pending on the area is Google, Apple, and Microsoft. Some other Social Media's might be doing well at it too.

If you visit engines that use inferior algorithms you don't get anything useful out of them, it's practically a complete random chance you'll get anything interesting recommended.

Utter crap.

Whats the point of algorithms when the platforms weight results to favour what they want you to see?
"Every position must be held to the last man: there must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall and believing in the justice of our cause, each one of us must fight on to the end."

Earl Douglas Haig, Order to the British Army, 12 April 1918

So death, the most terrifying of ills, is nothing to us, since so long as we exist, death is not with us; but when death comes, then we do not exist. It does not then concern either the living or the dead, since the former it is not, and the latter are no more.

But it doesn't work when they manipulate the results.

Like on Youtube when they try to hide certain content and promote others which I have absolutely no interest in.

you're an outlier and you know it, moulders

i would wager most people on this site are outliers based on interests, youtube isn't built for us
