In the ultimate irony, Poundland has been sold off by PEPCO, for a "nominal sum" believed to traditionally be £1.
The retailer which used to boast "everything for £1" in it's adverts has been struggling with falling sales and rising costs.
Pepco said the deal will help it shift away from food and drinks, improve its revenue growth and boost its profitability. The rescue plan is expected to include the closure of up-to 100 stores, and requests for rent reductions on scores of other units.
As part of the restructuring plan, Pepco is set to retain a minority stake in Poundland.

Drat, now where do I get cheap AA batteries for my cameras? Am I stuck with paying a premium for Duracells from ASDA?! Also, a few years back I was supposed to have a full week of "training" and then an interview for Poundland in Meadowhall, but Laura, the head of the support workers, blocked it because I would've lost my support going to that all week.
I wouldn't mind but she knew I was desperate for paid employment.

Just get rechargeables mate. Never have to run out to get batteries again cause even if you forget to charge them, they'll be ready in a few hours.

Wilko Hi power "Juicy" batteries are good value, and are now being sold through "The Range."
Also, ALDI High power batteries aren't too bad either.
Not all Poundland stores are closing, but you can expect increases in prices, and ruthless disposal of unprofitable lines. They will also be moving away from those large mega stores that we are used to, and going back to smaller, highly focused, units.

Rechargeables tend to be a lot more expensive though, I bought a charger and some batteries from the new Ikea at Carbrook last year.

Moving to smaller shops isn't necessarily a bad thing, OK it means less staff on the tills (I hate using self service machines) but I can cope.

Sure, they're! But when I was using them, they last for ages, for a single pack of 4 and a charger (£20 or so like 5 -6 year ago), they last over 3 years with constant recharging, the investment was worth more than 4 times having to pay for cheap Alkaline.Rich-Allen1976 wrote: ↑14 Jun 2025, 07:22Beerkeg wrote: ↑13 Jun 2025, 21:23Just get rechargeables mate. Now, I don’t use much batteries at all.
... and better now, new ones last fully, or near fully (depends on branch) charged even over a year without use them. (mine, if not used, in less than a month, they were fully depleted. TT__TT
