Using a generic SNES style PC game pad on Steam?

Above.
According to video footage on YouTube, you can use almost any controller on Steam, I've tried to set up my wired Xbox Series X controller, and my PC actually picks it up, but when I tried to use it in Steam, despite following detailed instructions from said YouTube videos, it wouldn't pick the controller up.
Can anyone help? I'm trying to plan for when I eventually purchase the full version of Cassette Beasts Fusion on the 26th (3 weeks yesterday) as I'm a fan of the demo, or should I wait till "late Spring" for the Xbox version?
