You plant crops, they give you passive or harvest boosts. When a plant is mature and has another nearby plant it can mutate with, there is a small chance it will successfully mutate into a new plant. When that new plant is Mature, you can harvest it and get the seed so now you can just plant it. When mutating the plants don't exactly have to be next to each other. Rather the plot the new plant can spawn in has to have the right plants next to it.
For example you have a 3x3 square:
If "O" is the place your new plant can grow then any of the 2 or more X plots is where you wanna place your plants it will mutate from. It does seem that the more plants you have around the mutation spot, the higher the chance it will happen cause it can proc off of any of the nearby plants.
X O X
So if you fill the X and Y plots like any of these formations, the O shows you all the spots the plant can mutate and E are empty plots where nothing happens: (X and Y here since most new plants need more than 1 type of plant to mutate)
E X E X X X X O Y
O O O O O O O O O
E Y E Y Y Y Y O X

Thats the basics of gardening really...

Yeah you get more when you upgrade it further with sugar lumps. Up to 6x6. You can still mutate some things in 2x2, just fill 2 squares and leave the others empty.

Atleast you have somewhere to progress... I just have 2 "bake x amount in 1 ascension", all buildings to lvl 10 and a year worth of lumps left... I can do a full garden unlock in a week on average so thats around 520 lumps a year and you need like around 900 to get all the buildings to level 10... You get around 400 lumps in a year so if all goes well I'll finish my achievements by the end of the year....

I've been idling for almost three years and you're making more progress than I have!
