Been wanting to get into final fantasy but never knew where to start because they are so many of them! Are they all separate stories? If so are there any stand out bad ones, or just not as good as the others? I have a couple already (both random buys tbh) but like I said I'm not sure if they are good starting points.

So the majority of the final fantasy games are completely stand-alone, there are some which share certain themes and elements, and a couple of direct sequels.
FF 1 through 3 are 8 bit era (NES)
FF 4 through 6 are 16 bit era (SNES)
FF 7 through 9 are PS one
FF 10, 10-2 and 12 are PS2
FF 13 series is PS3/Xbox 360
FF 15 is current gen.

11 and 14 are MMO's

If you like your MMO's 14 is great to get into at the moment as the free trial is very generous, although the first 20 or so hours of story is quite tedious.

Otherwise, it depends on your prefered play style. 1 through 10 are turn based, whereas since 12 they are slightly more action rpg style. Many people will tell you their favourites and a lot of it comes through nostalgia (FF7 was a lot of peoples first so they will tell you it rules all, but personally i don't think it has aged well).

I'd say 10 is a nice entry that's not too hard, has a good story (in my opinion) and some fun characters. BUT it is very linear! Personally my favourite is 6.

Thanks for the summary! :) FF14 sounds like right up my street with the MMO so I might give that one a go. I already have 8 and 13 in my Steam library (like i said, random buys) so I have a nice mixture of FF games there as far as play style goes.

i'm currently replaying 9, easily the best out of the series released on the playstation 1 without a doubt, even with its odd storyline!

I really like Final Fantasy 14, I like the fact that you're able to do pretty much anything in the world

so i recently completed FF9 again which further cemented my love for it over 7/8, i also found in my attic a FF2 Japanese Wonderswan console which apparently is rare as fuck, but as it's unopened that's how it'll remain as it's a thing of beauty c:

Did you also kill the weird floating ball thing in the chocobo sky garden?
And the chocobo digging minigames?
And.... I don't remember what else there was to do.
Why do you like 9? It's easily my least favourite.

9 has the most characterization and character growth, in my opinion

also chocobo hot and cold rocks

Yeah the chocobo digging was fun. More fun than breeding / racing in 7 and ....what did you use chocobos for in 8?
The characters were exactly the issue for me though. I found it so hard to care about any of them. There's the fat knight, the midget with no face, the frog eating swamp monster who can't speak english, the rat woman with the spear.... yeah
Maybe I didn't pay enough attention to the story to see them grow as characters I don't know.
