Not surprised, most people probably didn't, it's pretty old, but had a cult following.
Originally it was an indie game actually, but the original was so well received that Nasu (owner of Type-moon -> Fate and Tsukihime franchise) hired the indie creators to make more. Then those creators went and made Under Night In-Birth when Nasu decided to focus more on Fate cause money. Now they are back thou cause Nasu is making the remake of the Tsukihime visual novel, and Melty Blood comes back along with it.

He was my first main back in the day. XD
He won't make it in Type Lumina thou. As far as we know, this one will stick to the main story of Tsukihime.
