Fatal Bullet is kinda like that, we're not his enemy but we don't follow him around either.

You don't exactly follow him around but his posse seem to be the main protagonists and you just happen to be one of them that only exists to help them

If you don't want to play as Kirito or associate with him in any way, there's other games out there. Kirito is the protagonist of the story as a whole so they'll never be an official SAO game without him. otherwise, there's Integral Factor on mobile, but this series is apparently ending after Alicization Lycoris anyways.

That's an interesting idea, most jrpgs tend to have a silent protagonist to make it easier to insert yourself into the role. I'm often put off SAO games because I don't know where to start since its the same character all the way through.

Kai, does it matter which Sword art games I start with?

They kind of start off from an alternative take on 75F. From a story perspective, Hollow Fragment is where the series starts, and it normally sells for less than £5 on sales these days (when they get discounted) so it's not too much of a gamble in the worst case scenario that you don't enjoy it very much.

I'd at least recommend watching up to ep.14 or reading the first 2 volumes of the Light Novels before starting or watching all of the first 2 seasons if you want some backstory on the main characters.

So, Start from Hollow Fragment, then Lost Song, then Hollow Realization then Fatal Bullet, before Alicization Lycoris for the story
