Toei Animation Hack Was Ransomware Attack.

NHK reported on Thursday that according to its sources at Toei Animation, the Toei Animation hack last month was a ransomware attack. NHK quoted a company source as saying, "the impact on production is still continuing, and we are working hard to bring things back to normal."

Toei Animation announced on March 11 that on March 6, an unauthorized third party accessed the company's network, which resulted in a shutdown of part of the company's systems. Toei Animation is currently investigating the matter. The hack affected the broadcast schedules for the One Piece, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Delicious Party Precure, and Digimon Ghost Game anime starting with the episodes slated to air on the weekend of March 12-13. All four shows will resume airing new episodes with the weekend of April 16-17.

Toei delayed Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the second anime film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise, from its original April 22 opening in Japan. The film currently has no set debut date.

Makoto Shinkai's New Anime Film Suzume no Tojimari Previewed in Teaser Video.

The official TOHO Movie YouTube channel began streaming a teaser video on Sunday for Makoto Shinkai's first new film in three years, Suzume no Tojimari (literally, Suzume's Door-Locking).

CoMix Wave Films describes the story:

On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety—
17-year-old Suzume's journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I'm looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly mesmerized by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob…

Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

The stars
The sunset
The morning sky
Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky—

Drawn in by this mysterious door, Suzume's journey is about to begin.

Shinkai (your name., Weathering With You) is directing the film and writing the screenplay. He is also credited with the original story. Masayoshi Tanaka (your name., Weathering With You) is designing the characters. Kenichi Tsuchiya (your name., Garden of Words) is the animation director. Takumi Tanji (Children Who Chase Lost Voices) is the art director. CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc. are producing the movie. TOHO is distributing the film.

Shinkai's other works include 5 Centimeters Per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, She and Her Cat, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, The Garden of Words, and Children Who Chase Lost Voices.

hololive Virtual YouTubers Reveal Their Favorite Springtime Manga For Shuiesha's Spring 2022 Manga Festival

In a special collaboration between hololive and Shueisha, a total of 35 Virtual YouTubers from hololive, hololive English, hololive Indonesia, and holostars were invited to recommend three manga titles for spring reading as part of "Haruman!! 2022," Shueisha's upcoming annual Spring Manga Festival.

A quick tally of the recommendations reveals that SPY x FAMILY is by far the most popular among the VTubers, with 11 picks in total, followed by Hunter x Hunter, Dr. Stone, and 2.5 Dimensional Seduction, all three received five picks each. Some of the recommendations also reflect the talents' personalities; for example, Shirogane Noel, known for her muscle-brained approach to games, chose Mashle: Magic and Muscles as her top pick, whereas the vampire Yozora Mel recommended Asaka Noriko's The Vampire and the Rose. Also worth mentioning is hololive English's Nanashi Mumei, who chose Tokyo Ghoul for all three of her picks.

The staff of Anime Expo revealed on Tuesday that this year's convention will host Mobile Suit Gundam mechanical designer, illustrator, and game creator Mika Akitaka.

Akitaka was the mechanical designer of several Gundam series, including Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: A War in the Pocket, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Last Blitz of Zeon. He was also mechanical designer for Date A Live, A Certain Scientific Railgun S, Strike the Blood, Martian Successor Nadesico, Silent Mobius, and City Hunter. He is the creator of Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. He also illustrated the MS Girl series for Model Graphix Magazine.

Akitaka designed MAX, the mascot of Anime Expo. He previously attended the convention in 1999.

The event will return as an in-person convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center on July 1-4, 2022.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Film Rescheduled to June 11 After Toei Animation Hack

Post by Ojisama » 14 Apr 2022, 19:26

Toei announced on Thursday that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the second anime film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise, has been rescheduled for June 11. It had been delayed due to the Toei Animation hack last month. Toei added that the entire staff is putting all their effort into meeting the new release date.

The film was slated to open in Japan on April 22, and then was slated to open in North America this summer. (The CG film's release schedule may differ depending on each country and region.)

As the name suggests, the film will have a focus on the "superhero" aspect. Original creator Akira Toriyama is in charge of the screenplay and character design. Planning for the new film project began in 2018, before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The film has a goal of telling "a large-scale story." Aside from story composition and character design, Toriyama is also writing lines of dialogue for the film.

Tetsuro Kodama is directing the film, and Naoki Satō is composing the music. Nobuhito Sue is the art director, Chikashi Kubota is the animation director, and Jae Hoon Jung is the CG director.

Guest cast members include:
  • Hiroshi Kamiya as Gamma #1
  • Mamoru Miyano as Gamma #2
  • Miyu Irino as Dr. Hedo
  • Volcano Ōta as Magenta
  • Ryota Takeuchi as Carmine

The staff has previously revealed new character designs for Dende, Korin, and Bulma, and teased that Whis will appear in the film.

Staff laid off at UK offices of Crunchyroll and Funimation?

Probably unsurprisingly, posts on social media sites appear to indicate that staff at the UK offices of Crunchyroll and Funimation have been made redundant following the recent merger of the two organisations. There are also indications that employees of Madman Anime Group, the Australian arm of Crunchyroll Inc, have been included.

The posts seem to relate mainly to staff in PR and social media advertising.

It is regrettable that when an organisation gets larger, it's staffing seems to get smaller. This isn't true of course, but it is inevitable that some adjustments take place. If you have two people and there is now only one job, someone has to go. Hopefully some of these staff will be able to move to other positions in the new organisation.

San Diego Comic Con posts losses of US$8 Million for 2020.

2020 and 2021 have been rough for Conventions all over the world, but the first year that in-person events had to be cancelled has proven to be particularly bad for the San Diego Comic Con.

Registered as a non-profit organisation, the SDCC gets it's revenue from ticket and booth sales, both of which were totally lacking in 2020, and 2021 we can assume.

SDCC chief communications and strategy officer David Glanzer said to media news website ICv2, "While we are relieved we did not have to resort to furloughing any employees, the impact of not having an in-person convention for two years has had a negative effect on our financial resources. As you know our primary source of revenue is tickets and booth sales. The pandemic temporarily suspended those opportunities. I should point out that our organization has long had a fiscally conservative outlook... Fortunately, a vast majority of those who purchased tickets in 2019 for the 2020 show opted to have their tickets rolled over to 2021, and when restrictions continued and 2021 had to be cancelled as well, most continued to be enthusiastic and chose to have them rolled over once again for the 2022 show."

This year, the in-person SDCC event returns, and will be held at the San Diego Convention Center on July 21-24.
