[D] Anybody watching "My Dress Up Darling?"

No spoilers please for other members.

I've been an avid reader of the manga, and was thrilled to see an anime release.

I have seen some adverse comments about the amount of fanservice. There are a few ecchi moments in the manga, but I don't recall much out and out fanservice.

Any comments?

Anybody watching "My Dress Up Darling?"

The Japanese title is Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru

The Manga is an exploration of the Cosplay subculture, with an underlying rom-com theme.
It features a boy from a traditional family who doesn't play video games or watch anime. He lives his life perfecting his skills in making traditional Hina dolls. He wears traditional clothes and has a gloomy atmosphere. In contrast, the female lead is bright, cheerful, fashionable and loud, and is fully immersed in modern culture. She aspires to be a cosplay idol, but cannot find any costumes to fit her figure properly, and doesn't have any handicraft skills to make one.

When the two come together, their complementary skills lead them into an exploration of the world of cosplay. Designing, Fabrics, make-up, photography are all covered in the series so far. They make new friends and draw closer together.

The ecchi moments occur during costume changes, and in the revealing nature of the costumes themselves.

The comments I've seen seem to indicate that there is a lot of attention in the anime to these moments. You get to expect fanservice in anime rom-coms but can it become to much?

We'll have to wait and see.

I haven't started watching it yet. It's showing on Crunchyroll. Since I'm to mean to pay premium, I only able to access to the first 3 episodes so far.

It's just that the reviews I have seen mention excessive fan service. Mind you they are American.

They're right, it's full of fan service. Since he's agreed to helping her make the cosplay outfit, they're going to need measurements.

No wearing an old t-shirt and wrapping it in package tape to make a dress form here.

Rom-com without fanservice. Can there be such a thing? I'm just not fond of series where the fanservice dominates over the story. The Manga isn't like that at all.

Well, I'll just have to see for myself.

As long as there's a good story, I don't mind so much. I'm giving them a pass for the second episode as they've established the need for measurements.

Just watched the third episode, which is all they have at the moment. Kitagawa seems to be a very genuine person, and not concerned what other people may say. And the woman waiting in line is right - high schoolers are scary.

2 episodes down. I think that the "Measurements" may have been a bit strung out, but it establishes some of the fundamental differences between the 2 main characters

Laugh out loud moment?

Ditched Crunchyroll for Funimation, and now I'm up to episode 4.

Now we begin to see some of the nitty gritty of creating a cosplay from scratch. You def need somebody with sewing skills, and access to good quality materials if you want to pull off the correct look and feel. Having "worked" with my son to create his cosplay, I can sympathise with the trial and error that new cosplayers go through.

Laugh out loud moment?
Marins reaction to Gojou having so many different fake eyelashes.

Skills, materials - both are good. But the better your references, the better you'll be able to reproduce your outfit.

I did like his panic when she said there was an event in two weeks and he busily worked towards that goal despite everything going on in his life.

And I was so sure Gramps was going to use that line.

Episode 5. Marin and Gojou attend their first cosplay event, and learn a few things.

After the measurements, fan service is pretty normal, if not less than usual. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Laugh out loud moment?
"My clothes are about to come off"
"Say what...?"

At least she had fun at her first cosplay and Gojou doesn't have to worry about her leaving any time soon (as if she'd stop being his friend).

Still, liking that moment on the train.

Another episode watched, and this really moved things along, but in a good way. Gojou's skills bring him another customer, and Marin declares her love for another character to cosplay.

Gramps has another mishap, although not as bad as last time, but ends up as the star.
