My general opinion
The first series and its sequel are...decent. good, even, were one to highly value the production quality. And I do. Lights and sounds count for something in my book.
SAO II with the guns and shit... not as good. Still ok, I guess, but not good.
Gun Gale Online was even worse. Really went trash with that. You can't make a decent anime with production quality alone. If it doesn't have decent characters and story, it's trash no matter how pretty it looks.
Alicization, though. Setting aside war of the underworld, Alicization was really good. Best of the franchise. Great characters and story and stuck to its own worldbuilding which normally you should take for granted but...
War of the underworld is absolute trash, mostly because it doesn't stick to its own world building and deus ex macrappas all over any notion of plot. The good characters already kaput and it was no longer interesting in the slightest. Might even be worse than gun gale online, idk.
There's some movies. I saw one, and it was decent. I think the general problems with SAO are more forgiving when its packaged into a single movie.

Idk, it's a spotty franchise but I can still recommend the first series and alicization, minus war of the underworld.
Alicization is particularly good though. Like, I've seen a lot of anime and it's in my top ten. It's a clear outlier in this franchise.

I love SAO, my main gripe about it is they could have done so much more with season one. They could have dragged that out over multiple seasons and it would have been amazing.

There is the Progressive Light Novels / Manga to read. Its the first arc re-wrote, with more in-depth of the floors. I enjoyed GGO more then the other arcs.

I'm a huge fan of SAO it's has its drawbacks (GGO is a bit meh) but overall I love the characters and the story is generally pretty engrossing. The original series and Alicization are my personal favourite from the franchise.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

In terms of the anime, I have really enjoyed it. Felt the The SAO arc should have gone on much longer. ALO was good but the bit after GGO with turd. I enjoyed alicization and war of underworld a lot and preferred War of underworld to be honest.

Underwelmed by GGO but then I watched it a 2nd time and enjoyed it a lot more.

The film was one of the best arcs (if you could call it that).

It all made me want to play MMORPG more haha

I started watching SAO on Netflix a while back and season 3 has just been added to Netflix so I'll be watching that soon.
