Is there any (meaningful) difference between High School of the Dead and High School DxD? Based on the summaries, they appear very similar to me.

Yes, Highschool of the Dead has actually likeable characters.

Thats how I see it anyway. I tried watching Highschool DxD, but the characters seemed very "meh" and episode 1 didn't suck me in enough to continue. I mean sure, its ecchi / nearly hentai so I'm hoping too much, but it felt like I'd rather just watch some proper hentai. Ladies vs Butlers was at least funny and a decent enough anime if you don't watch the last episode.
