Remembering Favorites

Post by Momogari » 18 Oct 2019, 01:31

This shall be a light discussion thread about favorites.

I started wondering, in how often I talk about my top 20, my top 30, my top 40...without actually knowing what's in there. I know it's vague partly on purpose because when you watch so much you can't really keep track of it (at least, if you lack diligence as much as I do). But I got curious as to what's actually in there so I'm going to to try to remember the really good anime and figure it out.

Feel free to do the same or just...whatever.

Firstly,
I think March Comes in Like a Lion might be in my top 5. Probably at least top 10.
Shin Sekai Yori is probably top 10.
The Beast Player Erin used to be in my top 10, but I think it's probably between 20 and 30 now.
Same with Black Lagoon.
BECK is probably top 30 somewhere.
House of Five Leaves is probably top 20.
SAO Alicization is top 5.
Last Exile is top 20.
Samurai Champloo had a great story in addition to great animation and music. It should be considered for top 30 at least.

Honestly I think Hisone and Masotan might be in my top 20. That was a surprisingly valuable show.

AICO Incarnation should be considered for top 30 at least.
And ERASED.
Arslan Senki is probably top 20.
I used to rate Skip Beat very highly. I can't seem to get into it now, but I once called it the best shoujo that existed. I guess I need to consider it.

I have to be careful. I'm trying to think about good anime in the sense of being able to argue for some objective stance of good eg in terms of characters, story, or production value. So things I personally enjoy but don't necessarily have those can't really be included. Or at least I need to be careful with them. This includes:
Akagi and Kaiji
Log Horizon
Yuri on Ice maybe

I shall add more here as I think of them.

Ah, Akira. I won't try to rate films along side TV and OVA because I think they're really different things. If I did, I'd have to invent a number that comes significantly enough before 1 just to house Kimi no Na wa.

Madoka huh. I did see that. And it was good. It wasn't super my style but yeah...maybe? I don't remember enough about it though.

You know, considering the animation and music even with the episodic structure, the stories it told and the characters were fantastic. I never liked Cowboy Bebop as much as others did, but it really was a great anime. I guess it's top 20.

Terror in Resonance was really that good huh?

Yes, Terror in Resonance is in my TOP 5.

I literally cried watching it.

But I think this is something specific to me. I don't think most people would feel the same.

Well if it's in your top 5 I should watch it regardless.

Knights of Sidonia was a great one actually. I know that's a bit personal so conservatively I'll say top 30.
The Twelve Kingdoms has serious value to it. Probably top 20.
Full Metal Panic: Invisible Victory was seriously great. I didn't even finish it I don't think but oh boy. Top 30 at least.
What was that one we saw recently.
Iroduku: The World in Colors is top 10 easily.
Bunny girl senpai might be top 30.
Domestic Girlfriend might be top 30? idk though

Oh yeah, forgot about Death Note, thank you. top 20.

Yeah I was thinking about Anohana too. I don't remember it well but I remember it being really good. Top 30 at least. Maybe top 20?

Bokurano is top 20.

One of my favorites that I'd wager most people forget at this point is Martian Successor Nadesico.

I couldn't get into Nadesico myself. Didn't watch more than 3 episodes of it.
