I love how different Shigure is from the original anime. In the OG he was portrayed so care free and silly. But it's evident he has always been manipulative and dark with his own agenda since the beginning. This reboot is doing fantastic in portraying not only that but also showing us the glimpse of the reason behind his motives. Regardless, he is far from being a bad guy. However, this serves as a better contrast to Tohru's own kind personality and the effect she has on others.

I am not sure Tohru is kind in the way I understand being kind. For me being truly kind is a matter of choice. From my perspective she seems more like being too simple to be unkind.

It's like those people who do things only because they were brought up in a certain way. They do not make decisions, they do not choose.

It's like those people who don't lie not because they don't want to, but because they're too stupid to lie properly.

It's like those people who are cowards. Being unkind to someone requires courage. This is a kind of person who will thank someone for beating her.

Well, I don't like her anyway. :P

Keep watching.

We have hardly seen a glimpse of Tohru's life with her mom and much less with her dad. Her childhood had a very strong impact in why she treats those around her with kindness. She does choose to be the way she is. We just haven't been shown why at the moment.

Hopefully you will find Tohru with more depth later on!

I'd watch it anyway, DESPITE Tohru. Other characters are more interesting to me (so far). The family is interesting and Tohru's friends as well.

Yes, I just caught up yesterday. I had only watched the series and I haven't read the manga. So I was unprepared for the change in Shigure. I was like, "Whoa! That is the dark side sir!" I'm liking this side of him, but I also miss the silliness.
