But obviously he will end up being just a lost boy. Probably in love with Hatori.

Tohru is purposely meant to be written this way. The Sohmas are a dark family full of sadness and pain. Tohru is the foil to literally every single Sohma she meets and the catalyst to breaking them from the cycle they are stuck in. In a family where the norm is abuse and being rejected and not having any aspirations for a happier life, Tohru brings all of that which they lack. She is portrayed as positive, perfect, innocent, and kind because that is how she counters everything else. That said, in a much later part of the story we see glimpses of Tohru's own struggles and fears. And it better explains in full why she acts a certain way and how it links to her family.
In short, her personality has a purpose. It's not just to be cute or the girl everyone likes. And there are reasons as to why she behaves as she does.

I may or may not have read the manga countless times this past 13 years.

I was always scared to read the manga. I really loved the anime (the old one, but the new one is shaping up to be good) and I didn't want that to change.

Its a wonderful read.
The story is so much more complex, dark, and deep.
The anime is following the original story perfectly with all the details. On that note, I loved the latest episode. Finally we see Hatsuharu again! I adore Justin Cook in this role. And we were given an easter egg for those of us who watched the original. The tune Tohru hums while she is washing dishes is the ending theme song of the original anime.

I just watched episode 8 and
what Shigure said to Akita!!! Ooooo!
I will totally add the manga to my reading list. It seems that I add three series for every one that I read, but that is a good problem to have.
