OK, so this is what we know about the world:
There are some particles produced by the intent to kill. They can be detected.
There is a device (Mizuhanome) which can extract the symbols from id and produce a visualisation based on them. It's all based on the particles found. The visualisation is called a well.
Kaeru is an artifact of the way Mizuhanome works. Probably also Sakaido. It's possible to enter the well from outside, but one must:
a) have intent to kill
b) use a device to do something which is similar to comitting suicide
The person after entering the well loses all their memories. When they see Kaeru, they assume the identity of Sakaido, a brilliant detective whose sole purpose is to solve the case of Kaeru's death. It's usually related to why the person whose id is considered kills.
In the beginning John Walker was thought to be another artifact, but for some reasons it became clear that it's an external influence and it's probably something that causes people to become murderers. It's not clear what it is.

Watched the first three episodes. The cells surprise me.
A clear wall/doors makes sense, makes it easier to see what the prisoner is up to. It's why they used to have bars.
The problem with bars, however, is it makes it easier to share things, injure or kill yourself. And yet they give them beds that aren't metal shelves mounted to the wall with a vinyl-coated pad on top. Harder to kill yourself that way. But these guys have what look to be hospital beds, and that's what the pyrotechnician looped his sheet-rope around the hydraulic cylinders so he could strangle himself. Older prisons still have regular beds, making suicide possible, but you'd think they'd do something better for what is clearly a new place.
And what's up with that privacy screen for the toilet? Sorta defeats the purpose of making one side completely visible. It's another security issue.
I was also surprised to see who else was in the cell area.

So what I said above was correct. The person entering the well assumes the identity of a brilliant detective. But his name was different this time. So it's not always Sakaido. This time it was Anaido. So it depends on the person. But Kaeru is constant.

Oh, that makes sense. So I think it's safe to assume that skills and attitudes of the person "piloting" the brilliant detective are important for how the brilliant detective behaves e.g. how intelligent they are etc.
