Why does Viz censor manga?

Post by Jongriffin » 07 Sep 2021, 09:23

While reading my copies of Dr. Slump and Claymore, I noticed that on the front page of some issues, there was a notification that some content had been "modified" aka censored. My question is, why? Why does Viz feel the need to censor some of their manga? Do they feel like their readers are little babies that can't handle the story the way the writer intended? It's rather insulting. Does anyone know why Viz does this crap?

knowing Dr. Slump and Toriyama, that was probably censored content involving naked minors (specifically goku who loses his trunks often in the original DB)

I didn't rmenber Gokuh losing often his tunks in DB. the only time he apear naked was ep 1 or 2? when fishing in the river...

but yeah. saddly not only Viz, for many years Manga (and by so, Anime) has had been censured by everyone who had published...

Not that much lately, fortunately for us.

But good to know, that at least now they said it. And not simply cut/modified the manga as they want. (as has been done for years...) ... "Say Otomos' Legend of Mother Sarah" ...

CN censored Naruto (and many more in the States... and those went later licensed to other countries alreasy censored by USA standarts...) with made the Spanish airing in CN crap and low in audience... people just prefer the Fansubber uncensured...
speaking about "Meitantei Conan (Detective Conan) renamed as "Case Close" WTF!? the HELL THEY thoug when put that name??

True! That said, I highly doubt Toriyama was sexualizing the minors anymore than he was doing it with Goku. I find it sad that American society sees all nudity as inherently sexual. As long as nudity is tastefully done and not pornographic or sexualized, it shouldn't be a big deal, regardless of age.

There is also the issue in Dr. Slump of Akane drinking. They censored underage drinking and smoking. This is stupid. Akane is supposed to be a punk trouble maker. Having her drink juice just doesn't make any sense.

If you think about the time when it originally aired it was thought only elementary children would watch it. So it’s contents was drastically altered as a result.

Unlike Japan, the assumption in the US is that if it's a comic or animated tv show, it's for kids. Of course, there are exceptions - x-rated cartoons in adult magazines, Heavy Metal, etc. Can't have kids seeing naked bodies.

There's also bits of Japanese culture, expressions and the like that the viewers and readers won't know, so they get changed into something a little more understandable to an American audience lest they be accused of trying to indoctrinate their kids.
