Working retail security is a fucking joke. Just had someone run out with stuff. I was right by the front door, and making eye contact with him as he came up. MOD was on the phone with the police, and NOTHING happened. PD said "wait until they leave".

I was so ready to tackle this smug fuckface, that I had to mentally turn that part of my brain off. I was 110% ready to prevent him from leaving, but had to force myself not to.

I hate this job. I'm all restless, and antsy, and pissed off at work now. This job is completely pointless.

As a former Retail Manager, I feel your pain. I don't know what it is like in the US, but speaking from experience you have two options.

1 - As the police said, wait for them to exit the shop and then detain them. The Police will come (eventually) and will take statements etc. (Meanwhile, you have to hold them in a secure place, and monitor them at all times, which means you can't get back on the door to stop anymore thieves.) They will take them and the goods away (for evidence photos and valuation). They will then be released on Police Bail and be back on the streets in a couple of hours, and maybe even back in your shop for another go. Meanwhile, you might get your goods back in about a month if you are lucky.

1 - Stop them as they leave and retrieve the goods, so no loss to your business and now you know what they look like you can stop them coming back in (hopefully). Remember, a shop is PRIVATE PROPERTY and you can ban anybody from entering. If you can get a picture to circulate around the staff, that's a bonus. I could fill a book with the stories I have about shoplifters.

Ugh, that really royally sucks. Hope you didn't get reprimanded in the end of it all. I know there are some rules of don't do anything to harm yourself even if they are stealing property, but then they'll still be like "Why didn't you do anything about it? "

Neither option are open to me, tbh. Police response is too slow, and we don't have any "hands on" policy with thieves.

Nah, no reprimand... but the job still sucks.
Just trying to get YT monetized so I can do that instead. The bar for my current income is low, so I could probably live of a tiny channel, even with low metrics.
