"Alright, let us through!" a nasal voice complained. Imp frowned, turning to see a crowd of familiar furry faces clustered at the door, being held back by the suits of armor hired tonight as security.
"You've not got an invitation, you're not gettin' in!" the first suit declared to Toothpick and the rest of the Badger Gang.
"What?" Toothpick declared. "Look at us! We're mobsters!"

"But you're not monsters," Imp Perfect said, coming up to the door. "This night is not for you."
"And what iffen we don'ts want ta go?!?" Toothpick grinned, his namesake sticking out at a jaunty angle.

Lightning flashed and thunder roared, drowning the hall in darkness except for the energy pouring out of Imp's blazing eyes.

"Eh, I think we got da wrong place," Toothpick swallowed. "Let's go, boys."

"Goodnight!" Imp smiled, back to normal.

"Boss?" rumbled Mongo, glancing back at Imp as they exited.
"Not now!" Toothpick gasped, pulling at his collar. "I think I swallowed my toothpick!"

A male Rakshasa, Mafush, made his way to the door. He was dressed in blue silks and satin a formal attire one associate with an aristocrat, noble or rich merchant from a fantasy world. Mafush had played politics for sometime but had grown bored of it. The great game of playing with the lives of others no longer appealed to him. Lately he dabbled in magical research instead but it was of a dubious nature as being part cat cunning and curiously got the best of him and was natural instinct to him. Curiosity was why he had intended this Ball.

Mafush had received an invitation to an all Monster Ball in a place that resembled modern Earth. He was generous curious on who knew his whereabouts and who invited him. The invitation didn't reveal either, nor did it seem like was some type of cunning trap. As a Rakshasa he could smell traps with each it was instinct for him. It also meant he was born with a tremendous amount of magical knowledge and the ability to naturally use them. However, he had unlike many others of his race dived deeper into his arcane abilities. Most were more curious about and involved in the Great Game, politics. It was so fascinating to Rakshasa that most never bothered to question their natural gifts in magical aptitude and simply used it. However, Mafush is different in that respect and probably as result for his advanced age had committed less atrocities than others of his age and race.

The guards at the door let him sensing he was indeed a monster. What he saw when he entered was many other monsters and a festival. Dancing, games etc. Were these to a monster's taste? Hardly, these seemed like human ideas for a festival not a monsters. It was clue on who had invited him though, he planned to get to the bottom of it. However, he needed to mingle in if he was to learn more and not kicked out. He was sure the host did not want to be known.

Mafush walked to a game in which the monsters bashed a pumpkin in with a club. There was another in which they launched pumpkins at targets though a cannon. These were both quite popular events. Well most monsters like destruction so it made sense. For now Mafush decided to just watch the participants and measure how well they did, that would be expected a monster like him, and that what he needed to blend in as, as a Rakshasa.

Walking through the darkness and into the light, dressed in a blood red dress with scoop neckline showing off her pearl white skin a young women almost seemed to float across the floor. Long red hair with black highlights glittered while emerald green eyes looked right into your soul as ruby red lips smiled seductivly. Swishing hips and hands that went up tipped in long razor sharp ruby red nails she twirled around in song. She hadn't been out in years, but this was the time Annastaia could finally have some fun. It was so boring where she was and with whom she was with and she really needed to get out. A lone village with boring farmers was just not what a girl would call fun, but here she could smell the sweet aroma of others and even some humans which she wouldn't mind using as a snack later.

Not like anyone would notice or know.

Imp stood on one of the rafters, smiling at the monsters having fun.

"This is a mistake, you know," the slender man with the blue hair said. "He won't fall for it."
"He was human, once."
"I doubt he remembers."
"Just keep your eyes looking. I especially want any human who gets through that door to wear one of the sashes to protect them. I want no death here tonight, this really is a party."
"And I am just your humble instrument," the man bowed, a smile on his thin lips like a knife cut. "But if he does show up...?"
"Then you tell me," Imp said. "And keep everyone out of his way. You are looking, aren't you?"

Eyes blossomed around the hall.
"I'm always looking," the Sword replied.

Bored Mafush pulled his tiger eyes away from the mashing pumpkins. Even at parties those Monsters that only had muscles and no brains enjoy the simply games he observed. However, the one who had put this party together would be someone more cunning then that. Mafush moved on to see what other events were taking place. In fact was surprised to a dance floor and near by it a bar that was serving drinks. It was a professional dance floor, they dancers knew what they were doing. They were all monsters, guess this was also meant to be a party that monsters could actually attend and no one think it was out of the ordinary.

Suddenly Mafush noticed something, that he hadn't previously. Among the crowd were humans, few they might be they were there, dress in monster costumes. One even went up to him and complimented him on how realistic his fur looked and said that's exactly what a were tiger would look like it was real. The human further commented the noble attire was intriguing mix on it too. Mafush, thanked him even though he was irritated at being refereed to has such a weak pathetic monster. Though to the human, he didn't think the human thought were-tigers were a lesser monster.

Mafush wondered why would someone go to so much trouble though? What was there objective? There had to be a good logical explanation for this. Mafush still didn't want to stand out as he had yet to identify who the key players were. Observation was still needed, so Mafush moved on, and aimed to interact, he spotted a cat folk who seemed to be observing, but was obviously doing so. Well now, she might have some insight, and with little innocent talk he might learn something useful. Mafush decided to go up to her and ask.

"Good evening miss, what brings you here, to this fine party?"

Trix was very excited about the Monster Ball event. She knew she would fit in perfectly as she often frightened young children on a daily basis without even trying.
Trix was half human, half spider, most of the upper half of her body human, and her lower half resembling that of a black widow spider. She was just under 6ft tall.
She did her very best to make an effort tonight and had even saved up money to buy some new accessories to wear, a black lacy top and some heels, 4 pairs to be exact.
Her hair was styled as a short black bob, had pale blue eyes (2 main human eyes and 6 slightly smaller across the forehead), and a very obvious set of fangs coming from her red lips that you most definitely did not want to be bitten by.

She flashed her invitation ticket and was granted entry to the ball. There were other guests here already but she was desperate for a drink first before any form of socialising.
Trix hoped an insectivorous flavour was available.

The bartenders were a pair of men, one quite young with wild, unkempt hair who wore glasses, the other an older man with a bald head and a pleasant expression on his face. Behind the two of them were shelves with all sorts of liquors, while behind the bar out of sight were all sorts of other concoctions, many of which were unsafe for human consumption.

"Welcome, Miss," the bald bartender said, bowing in greeting as Trix stepped into a vacant spot. "How may we help you tonight?

Trix arrived at the bar where she was welcomed by a couple of polite bartenders. One of them bowed and greeted Trix. He asked her how he could be of service.
Before she spoke, Trix gazed at the shelves behind the bartender. Crickets, Maggots, Butterflies... so many flavours she liked.
"What a marvellous selection of liquors" she smiled at the bald bartender. She looked at them again and made her choice "I am in need of a cockroach martini please".
"Coming right up, Miss" The bartender said and proceeded to make Trix a drink.

As her drink was being made, she looked around at the other guests. Trix noticed across the room there was a male Rakshasa and a female Cat folk having a conversation. Naturally, Trix looked up to see if anyone was there. With her being half spider, she felt most comfortable out of the way in high areas. She noticed the little imp in the rafters with a smile on their face. Trix grinned at the Imp, 'Mischievous" she thought.
As she looked back towards the ground, the lady in the red dress caught her attention. 'There is certainly a variety of people here so far' she thought.

"Your drink, Miss" The bartender said.
"Thankyou" Trix smiled and took a sip.

The girl was hesitant at first with a shy smile then exclaimed excitedly that she had been invited via an invitation and showed it to Mafush, just as fancy as his. Judging by that, the host probably didn't go out of their way to distinguish between their guests or intentionally chose not to. The cat girl further commented on the huge amount of guests at the party. She dipped her head toward some new comers, one appeared to be a hybrid of a spider and human, and the other a vampire.

The female cat folk introduced herself as Kitty, and seemed a bit nervous about sharing it then finished with it being a pleasure with an emphasis of I hope it will be. Kitty was certainly polite and since she had introduced herself, it would be poor manners not introduce himself. How he introduce himself would matter. While he was intrigued about who was behind this event, he did not want to get drawn into politics are any schemes. It was important to establish exactly where you stood or you wanted others to think you stood when you introduced yourself. Since scheming was not on Mafush's agenda, introducing himself as a researcher would work out best. He didn't have to tell anyone exactly what he was researching, most would assume science of some sort, even among monsters.

"My dear lady, thank you for your kindness. I'm a Researcher by Trade and my name is Mafush and the pleasure is truly all mine." Mafush then bowed, but did not take Kitty's hand to kiss it as a human would have done. Among monsters that action could be quite socially awkward, as a hand could be poisonous or full of thorns, etc. Mafush wasn't being rude, just practical. Then he gazed up at Kitty before standing tall again.

"Would you care for some refreshments, they seem to have a full bar, that has drinks catered for all monsters?"

"Imp! There you are!" sighed Simon, a winged monkey wearing yellow silks. "We're almost ready and you're not dressed yet!"

Imp rolled her eyes.

"Now, don't you roll your eyes at me, young lady!" Simon scolded, waving a finger in her face. "You wanted me to be the planner, and you agreed to take full part!"
"Ah, Simon, you know I'm not good in crowds...."
"Yes, someone insulted you at Atlantis and you sunk the continent. We've heard the stories."
"It wasn't me! I don't know who keeps spreading that!" Imp scowled, stomping her foot. The building shook momentarily.
"Er, yes, well, if you could please refrain from dropping the roof on us and getting dressed, this party can proceed."
"Not if he doesn't show up."

"I'm sorry, what?" Simon demanded, confused.
"Never mind. I'll get dressed."
