Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

The event is nearly over, with just the final two parties remaining. So, let's open up the reactions, feedback & highlights topic!

Firstly, we'd like to thank everyone for coming along and indeed for supporting our charity fund-raising efforts across the weekend! We're pleased to confirm that between you all, you raised £800 for MIND, which is a fantastic amount for such a great charity.

We shall be announcing our plans and dates for 2020 later this month (we have some big ideas in mind which we hope to see happen). In the meantime, please do use this topic to give us your reactions, feedback & highlights. What did you enjoy and would like to see more of? What would you like to see improved? How was it overall for you? Do you feel the changed format in terms of venue and space worked out? Let us know!

You can also post your videos/pics here - https://www.animeleague.net/forum/sh...55#post4780455

We would also like to encourage everyone to check out our currently confirmed 2019 and 2020 events on the Animeleague website at www.animeleague.com/events especially London Anime & Gaming Con coming up in February and July, which is by far our biggest event in attendance and size which you can check out at www.londonanimecon.com

Once more, thank you all, and hope to see see you all at future events!

This was probably the best Alcon since 2014 so great job. Definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully it'll help encourage some more people to come back in future to make it a bigger con again.

      Pros:
+ Ran much closer to schedule this year.
+ Clan points were handed out more often so more people were invested in the clan battle.
+ The timetable was pretty good, a nice mix of quizzes/panels/stage acts etc.
++ Grace was brilliant at hosting events, keeping the crowds attention and organising things/keeping to time well.
+ JollyBoat of course, always brilliant.
+ The video game area was really chilled out and Beat Saber was a great addition while it was working.
+ The board game selection was really good, probably had the most fun there and James was really lovely.

      Cons
      - Limited dealers, no manga/dvd/bluray table was a let down.
      - I would have liked more rhythm games in the video games room for variety.
      - Not really ALs fault, but certain people were very disruptive of stage events which was a bit of a shame.

Heres hoping Alcon can keep climbing and hit the highs we used to see again soon.

      Best ALcon in a while.

Grace was awesome when on stage and anime opening quiz.
      Jolly boat always a plus.
Board games downstairs was alot of fun.

My only let down was no anime DVD and manga sellers but hear that was due to finding out how many tables could fit and the bar closing early.

But yeah, well done. Credit where credit due.

Re: Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

I've only been to two alcon's this year and I think I much prefer this approach than before and here's a few reasons why:

Before I get into the good stuff my heart fell thanks for the staff for making it happening and all their hard work to make an awesome weekend.

      Pros:
+ I loved the idea that the accomodation key was been able to get at the Liberty. I wished I paid more attention to the new layout of instrutions more closely that's more my fault than the cons.
+ Organisation was more on point this year and since the decrease in space the staff were more helpful if I needed anything.
+ People who were staying at the liberty were such lovely people and made so much more friends!

      Cons:

+ As already mentioned the dealer side of things were on the small scale and was a bit disappointing.
+ I've sent messages to staff on the actual online AL before the con didn't actually reply my messages.
+ I asked about the VIP that I paid for and feel that £20 is a bit steep for what I didn't feel like I recieved. I feel it was a bit of a rip off and a let down. Someone at the actual staff admitted that they didn't know what it was for.
+ I feel that if you didn't attend lazer quest I think their should be an option to get your money back. Or if you change your mind (not a big deal at this point and certainly not your fault.)
+ One of my friends as a wheel chair user that stayed at the liberty and was put on a high floor, the lifts kept on failing and and was actually stuck. I don't know why he's not on the ground floor to make it easier for him.

And forgot to mention. Not sure how much you guys have control over the accommodation, but seriously their was lack of a kettle, basic utensils the kitchen was pretty bare no shower curtain. No bins + bin liners and the had a very strong odar. I'm a neat freak and would love to keep the common room tidy but we had nothing to clean it and nothing to cook the dinner with.

Hi Abby here or Disastrous X (badge name) I thought the convention did not have as much as it used to have I think bringing more guests like outside Xbox would really live up things with a live show of DND they go to conventions and a lot of people know them. It could help sell loads of tickets.

Re: Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

Hey all! This was my first Alcon, I met a lot of great people and had fun, but i'd like to give some feedback! (Wall of text incoming)

      Pros:

The people - Everyone I met was super friendly, lots of socialising going on which was nice, I loved all of you

The concept - A good variety of content spread out over the days was great!

The stalls - despite some others wanting a higher spread of merchandise, I think for a convention like this there was a good balance. As far as i'm aware it's a much more social con than something like MCM or YCC, and a smaller selection gives people options to buy without crowding out the rest of the convention.

The venue - everything being so close together was excellent.

Video Gaming section - Nice variety, felt like there was comparatively less people interested in the retro games though, so maybe next year swap them out for more modern options? However - I heard from some people that the tournaments were horribly organised, for example one of the competitions did 2 1v1's (semi-finals style) and then decided to scrap the results from that and have a 4 player game to determine first place? This makes no sense lol. I also was informed that the PS Move controllers broke and they had no backups, which maybe could've been handled better.

Board Gaming section - I didn't take part in any of them but the selection was excellent, kudos to whoever organized this

      Cons:

The execution - This convention had a lot of good ideas, unfortunately realllly badly executed. I'll go into a bit more detail.

The stage staff - when Magenta and that one pirate guy with the beard in the audience have more charisma than your entire staff put together, there's a problem. I'm aware this is a convention first and foremost for members of the anime league forums, of which the staff are presumably prominant figures and that's why they got opportunities to run everything, but they really fell flat with the whole "entertainment" part on nearly every single event I tuned into. I know there's a lot of events going on and it's hard to find entertaining people for all of them, but geeeeeez

Staff Bias - this might just be confirmation bias on my part, but from what I noticed most of the events were won by the same clan as the organizer of that event. Feels a little shady y'know? But I might be wrong! Could potentially avoid having the organisers of events being clan members for impartiality reasons.

Scheduling - I don't think there was a single main stage event that was on time lol - I know problems can happen, but do runthroughs of your panels / events before hand and make sure it can fit into the time slot, and make sure you're ready before it starts!

      Attention to Detail
      - A lot of the events felt like they were mostly done on the spot with minimal organisation, the handbook was full of spelling mistakes, etc etc. Felt very unpolished for something with such big aspirations!

Wristbands - Maybe for next year, consider different coloured wristbands for 18+ / not 18+ to make for easier organization regarding afterparties? I heard some people did get different wristbands but I didn't personally see them, and if they did exist, why did we all get kicked out into the cold? Either sorting the wristband situation or hosting the afterparties in a different venue could solve the jarring transition between day and night events.

      Accommodation
      - i'm unsure how much control you have over this, but what kind of student accommodation doesn't have a kettle?

More details on the events (I wasn't at every single one, so my comments are just on what I noticed)

      Friday:

Whose that Pokemon - At this point, every person who is a fan of Pokemon could get all of these easily, *especially* when it's a multiple choice quiz. That means it just becomes a matter of people shouting it out as quickly as possible. One of the people I met in my accommodation (hi Tessa) suggested doing it with the event organiser having to act out the pokemon instead of having it on the screen - I think that could be a more entertaining option?

Cosplay Blind Date - Not what I expected, but had a lot of potential. It's as good as the audience makes it, which I think is a nice way of getting people involved! (Although there were a very limited amount of actually entertaining / funny questions/answers, maybe provide an optional selection for the blindfolded person next time, for if they're not comfortable thinking of their own?)

Talent Show - No complaints here, maybe a longer slot for this next year? (Presuming you'd have the signups for it)

Baka No Gameshow - Considering the organiser claimed to have been organising / wanting to do this for an entire year, they really didn't think about the logistics of it at all. So many of the challenges could potentially go on for infinite lengths of time, causing delays or having to change things up on the spot. Some of them didn't take into account allergies. Keeping the same people on the stage for every single challenge isn't optimal, you should be able to rotate members around when you're forcing them to consume so much stuff. There were soooo many better ways that this entire show could be executed - put a little more thought into it and you have a solid idea going. Wasted potential.

Eternal Autumn - Personally not my cup of tea, but the band was fine. Issue was heavy music did not mesh well with the awful acoustics in that room, it was just a wall of noise. Maybe consider a less heavy band for next year?

Yaoi Vs Yuri showdown - Everything about this was kinda yikes? It had absolutely nothing to do with yaoi or yuri except the names of the teams and those 2 guys making out (which wasn't planned as part of the event I presume). I'm not even sure what they were going for here, but it was pretty terrible

Friday Afterparty - Being kicked out into the cold for an unknown length of time when we were told we'd be "let right back in" was horrible. I'm unsure how much influence you have regarding this (as I think that was organised by the venue security) but being left out in the cold, a lot of us in somewhat skimpy cosplay clothing, was not good. Especially without knowing how long we were going to be stood there for! The party itself though, no complaints. It was good!

      Saturday:

Cosplay Masquerade - I'm pretty sure I heard one of the judges reasoning for voting a costume into the top 3 being because "I loved that anime". Despite that cosplayer being me, you really need judges that can express impartiality for things like this - whether or not they liked the anime should 100% not be a consideration.

Alcon Pub Quiz - For a quiz at an "anime league" convention, I wasn't expecting the majority of available points to be on music and non-geeky questions. Missed opportunity. If we wanted a regular pub quiz, there's plenty of those available around the country - cater to your audience!

Masquerade Ball - Excellent, keep this up!

      Sunday:

Name that Anime Opening - Good selection of songs, both recognisable while not being too easy. Well done here!

Jad Saxton - It's nice we got a professional to do talks, but did we really need three whole slots across the weekend dedicated to a single person? Feels like wasted opportunities for some variety.

Eira / Metal Mickey performances - unsure if it was the room acoustics, they were having a bad day, or if they're always like this; but their performances were not deserving of their own full slots. Maybe expand the talent show length as mentioned earlier and open it up to performers like this?

Cosplay Masquerade - This is just my personal opinion, i'm not a judge (obviously). As much as I enjoyed the dancing skit that got second place (it was fantastically entertaining), for a "cosplay competition" I really feel like the judges should've taken into account the cosplay more. It felt more like an honorable mention than an actual prize winner - the cosplay they were wearing was well made and accurate, but very simple in comparison to some of the other options taking part. Skits like that are more suited to winning the talent show.

Mario Kart Drinking Game - I might've been the only one thinking this, but this was realllllly boring from a spectator point of view. Watching a few people play Mario Kart, stop for a few seconds, then start again, is not a good spectator sport. Events should be entertaining for the entire audience, not just the few people taking part.

Closing Ceremony / Clan Battle - What's the point of the entire clan event with everyone taking part if it's just going to be decided by an excessive amount of points decided by the clan leaders at the very end? I'm pretty sure the entire thing was made irrelevant just by the arbitrary amount of points decided on at the time - whoever won that won the whole thing. I was a vampire and it felt like a cheap victory - there's no sense of accomplishment when the only reason we won was because we were louder than everyone else in the last event of the day. I imagine the Ninjas felt cheated out of their victory aswell!

Anigaming Party - Decent enough - way too many remixes (please just play the originals), and the DJ disappeared for like an hour and just left it running which was a bit of a bummer when we wanted to make some requests at the start.

      Final Thoughts

I'm aware that I likely come across as somewhat abrasive in this post, and for that I apologize, but honestly in terms of content across an entire weekend, this was one of the weakest conventions i've experienced. I will admit I enjoyed the convention, however that was due to the people more so than the actual event - and this is why i'm making this huge post to try and improve it. Hopefully it helps get across some of the disappointment from both myself, and others opinions i've heard over the weekend. There's a lot of potential here (especially with the sheer amount of manpower you have to hand) but it really needs some work. You've got a good community of people coming to the event, now just work on the content!

Stage staff; If there’s anything that you think we can individually work on then please do let us know. I always love to get feedback and it really has helped me to become a better presenter and get people more engaged.

Name that anime opening; As I said at the end of the event, this was my first time making and presenting this event, so this is very much appreciated! Thank you

Anigaming; I’ll definitely bare in mind the remixes thing for next time! Regarding me disappearing; I was only supposed to be gone for about ten minutes but I’m my way back inside I had to help another staff member with something important so I ended up being gone for about 25 minutes. All I can really do is apologise for that, and that’s why I only went for 1 more break in the 3 hour period. Requests were announced as being open a few times, as they were open and played from the beginning, but with people coming and going from karaoke I don’t think people realised for a while despite a few announcements. Next time I’ll look at getting a small sign to put on the front of stage so people know, and again, I am very sorry for the absence

Re: Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

Hey guys! Let me just start this off by saying I and my friends I attended with agree that this has been one of the best events in a long while, and it was really good to see so much feedback from last year taken on board and implemented. I think the general downsizing of the con did it a lot of good and I look forward to seeing more positive changes in the future.
Without further ado let's get into what I think were the Pros and Cons of the..well..Con, haha.

      Pros:

+ Compared to last year the events seemed a lot better organised
+ Grace was just fantastic. I felt she had a lot of charisma on stage and has quickly become a mainstay of the crowd-facing crew.
+ Downsizing the whole con to 3 days as opposed to 4 but still being able to get settled in the dorms on the Thursday was a very much welcome addition. It's always nice to get settled and hang out with your friends/get to know the new people you've been roomed with and plan your day together for the Friday.
+ Further on the previous point, having registrations in Liberty on the Thursday was a really nice touch. It was nice to be able to get in, get settled and then have time until we went to get our wristbands and conbadges
+ On the subject of convenience, it was very good having everything going on in the same building, not having to plan much extra time for moving between events when planning the day was very much a welcome change.
+ It was also really good having the SU Diner around, was very helpful when planning when/where to get food, and some pretty nice choices.
+ I really cannot overstate how excellent the tabletop area was. James was fantastic in running it, easily one of the most helpful staff of them all. Gave us clan points for just being chill and quiet and playing tabletop games!
+ I loved the lightsaber duels, they were a surprisingly good workout!
+ As always Jollyboat were fantastic, both the Big Geek Adventure and their main performance were wonderfully weird and nerdy as always. Definitely one of my favourite parts of the con. Just a shame about the technical difficulties in the main show
+ I was actually quite surprised at how much I liked the Lipsync Battle, not usually my thing but had some stellar performances.
+ The gaming room was really good. I loved the addition of Beat Saber and from what I saw, there was some great Sportsmanship in the competitions.
+ At the Pub Quiz, there were a few disruptive people, but the way the crew handled them was very well done in my opinion.

      Cons
      - Despite my first point in the Pros column, there were some events that were, sadly, poorly organised. Who's that Pokťmon was a notable one of these. Due to Mel forgetting to put the PowerPoint on her laptop, it turned into just using internet quizzes, which I could have quite easily done at home. The way which clan answered was determined was ineffective too. I feel like this should have been one of the things that was pre-planned, as I imagine it had nothing to do with the missing PowerPoint. The Closing Ceremony was also very unorganised and, as one of the constants in the timetable, I really expected more on the planning side of things here. The Clan Battle Showdown (Not Baka no Gameshow) relied, for the most part, on the audience for its content.
      - Not really a fault on AL's side, but it is a shame that certain attendees decided to be incredibly loud and disruptive during events. (Somewhat related, I have to say I disagree with one of the above posts re:Magenta. I don't think this is the attitude the presenters should be aiming for, while I think it's good to be confident, a presenter/host should avoid making it all about themselves.).
      - Not sure if this is just an issue of my not having downloaded a required update, but I downloaded the AnimeLeague App before the event and only had the option of checking out stuff for Manchester Anime and Gaming Con and nothing for Alcon Revival?
      - Mentioned this last year, but there was still some noticeable spelling mistakes in various places throughout the con. Most notably during Anime Bingo, some were misspelled on the PowerPoint, some on the Bingo sheets. At the end of the day, AnimeLeague is a company and thus should be a little more professional with the media they hand out to attendees. A definite improvement on last year, though.

Overall, very much a step in the right direction. I think this has been a good way of kind of hitting the reset button on the con and experimenting with ways to make it better. I think with better organisation and planning, we could really see the likes of Alcon 2012 and Duck-Con.

+ I feel that if you didn't attend lazer quest I think their should be an option to get your money back. Or if you change your mind (not a big deal at this point and certainly not your fault.)

Lazer quest is pre booked and therefore paid in advance so they wouldn't be able to refund you because you didn't want to go in the end.

Hi! So i've gone for many years now. Never miss it. Like the rest, positives and negatives.

      Positives:
      Good amount of points.
      Good atmosphere.
      MUCH easier to get keys.
      Games Room was MUCH better

      Negatives:
Not enough Star Power. I feel more guests would help get more people to show up.
Missed the amount of dealers, artists, and the show-game things (like the target range).
The Q&A being IN the game room caused some issues for a tournament I was watching - unsure if it was just the one time?

Re: Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

Overall I thought this years con was amazing. Pretty much everyone was super friendly unlike in several other cons Iíve been to this year.

      Pros -
      - as I said above pretty much everyone (staff, guests, attendees) was amazingly friendly and helpful.
      - things ran a lot smoother than last year, yes things ran behind but it was much more on time than last year and the staff did their best to keep things on time
      - the lipsync was an actual competition this year rather than just an attempt at one. The system they used was great and worked really well and was amazing to watch
      - all the events going on were so much fun to participate in and there was a good range in what was going on.
      - having the SU diner there was a god sent when you were hungry and wanted to grab something to eat between events.
      - the people running the panels were amazing. Especially Jad who had a panel everyday and was amazing with her fans.
      - the tabletops were great and everyone was super friendly. They had an awesome range of games to play
      - partyís were amazing and rally for everyone together and having a good time
      - JOLLYBOAT.

      Cons -
      - although fun to watch the lipsync seemed to be judged on whoever has the most ass out wins and the song choices for the semi finals and final rounds were quastionable and catered to a specific taste.
      - another point on the judging. It was pretty bias. In the lipsync semi final round 2 the cheers were a little louder for the girl on the left side of the stage yet it was the other who went through. Both were amazing performances and it could have gone ether way but when the crowd chose one and the other goes through it shows a little favouritism from the judges. Not helped by one of the tasks on the treasure hunt being to buy the staff a drink.
      - the media content in things like Ďdub that animeí need changing scenes like Johnny Bravo and the death note scene have been used for the past few years and are starting to get repetitive and old
      - things seemed a little cramped and crammed together this year
      - I feel like the actual cosplays should have been judged better in the cosplay masqurade. Having a dance take second place even if it was amazing just because it was funny made it seem more in place in the talent show that the masquerade . The costumes were well made but a little simple compared to others who deserved to be ranked higher than they were or deserved to actually place. Also the Lady Loki was absolutely amazing with her performance but the rules stated no metal weapons or pyrotechnics and she used both so the rules that they had set they didnít follow when judging
      - the kareoke needs to limit the amount of songs per person. A lot of people didnít get a turn because the same few people sang again and again and again, although it was fun, enjoyable and hilarious to watch the acts it was unfair to the people who waited all night for their go then told they had to wait until tomorrow.

Over all the con was amazing and I really enjoyed myself over the full weekend.

Re: Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

I always enjoy alcon and this year was no exception, hereís my pros and cons for this year

      ___Pros___
      Vampires won
Not just a brag, it shows more ppl are taking part in the clan activities and any clan has a chance of winning with more active participants which for me is a big part of the con even before I became a clan leader

Clan points were available more throughout the con for things anyone could join in on so it made it easier for ppl to join in, always a plus for me if clans get more attention ^-^

The clan area takeovers got attention for clans more as well as there were little posters all around the areas for them, those were a cool idea

Accom key pickup was so much easier, as much as I love seeing u guys at reg desk when I arrive each year Iím sure it was better for you too

Everyone is friendly, somehow I always come away from alcon with more friends, my only problem is I forget to ask ppls names sometimes lol

I preferred it all in 1 building, it fit well the way it was, the talks and panels get passers by join more now as they hear some as they come in or passing through also you could get food from the diner and sit and eat there while watching too

The tabletop had a good few tables too, I was worried when the dealers took their old spot but I think I like the new area better for it now
The dealers could make use of the windows to show more stock where they were as well

Anime screenings having its own room this time was good too as itís not disrupted by other things going on and you can just chill

Keep d&d where it is please, it got the attention it needed there and always seemed to be ppl playing when I came past (not a player myself but I stopped by and watched a few times)

      ___Cons___
There werenít as many playing assassins this year I kept looking out for the wristbands but barely found any
I think maybe they could have a sign or poster for it at the signup table to get more interest and let ppl know where to sign up
Also the way it played last year was a bit better with each colour/clan only being able to target certain colour ribbons each day
Example, Friday vampires can only kill pirates, pirates can only kill ninjas and ninjas can only kill vampires then rotate the other way for Saturday and then Sunday could be free for all
This year ppl were just killing me back a minute after I killed them but I needed to stick around to get their kill info and was being sociable

Being kicked out between daytime and party was a lil annoying, Iím guessing itís due to the age restriction for after 6 though so I can understand the bar donít want the chance of underage peeps sticking around
If thatís the reason then maybe everyone could be moved downstairs then wristband checked as they come back up with downstairs closing altogether soon after in case the weather isnít great outside

Canít think of any others atm but Iíll be around on here so if I think of anything I think could be improved Iíll be back

A few replies to above issues too
      @Themolian
Sorry you thought we relied on the audience too much for the clan battle, for clan stuff we just like to get everyone involved as you guys win the clan war as much as us clan leaders do

      @Eternal0snow92
If u booked and paid for laser tag then AL paid the laser tag company for you to go, they wonít get a refund if ppl change their mind and donít show as itís booked in advance just for us

On the Thursday the building had an issue with fire alarms and the lifts donít work if they think thereís a fire as they donít want ppl to be stuck in them, they did get it sorted thankfully
There was an accommodation request thread on here if your friend needed a bottom floor room they just needed to ask and Iím sure it wouldnít have been a problem

Also accom has always been that way with no supplies, I heard kettles were available at the desk where you get your key as students keep pinching them but weíve always had to provide kitchen stuff for ourselves if needed
Maybe it could be mentioned in the accom thread if itís not though
      Bleed for me
      Scream for me

Re: Thank You For Attending! Give Us Your Reactions, Feedback & Highlights!

@Kirsty05 05 As I've said it was more of a preference rather than a fault of the cons they ask us if they wanted feed back than I've provided feed back it was more of an idea. I'm more than aware of the situation it would be my fault if I decided not to attend it was a suggestion with regards to lazer quest. I just thought it'd be an option that's all. But that's fine if that's the case.

As for my friend I only had half the information so I don't know why things weren't put down in writing for him to be in the bottom floor I just thought it was odd that he was put on one of the highest floor an observation since he's been going for a long time at the alcon. So I have no idea what happened there. I don't know if he actually put a request down at the beginning. I just thought that was odd.

This is my only second year at Liberty or staying in a room such as this one. Clearer communication would be better on the thread. I had no idea that this was an option, I didn't realise their was a common room/kitchen available for each floor Lol. I didn't understand why a shower curtain wasn't provided tho.

I too was looking out for the ninja thing their was more activity in that department last year than their was this year. I had no idea how to sign up to that as well.

Still a bit confused with the entire ordeal with the VIP section.
